Thanks for the update. I had wondered how it all went and I'm glad to hear it went well. These trucks aren't 1 ton diesels, but at half the cost and way easier to live with everyday, I'll take my time and be patient for the occasional towing situation.

For future reference. The weight of the car on the trailer can be shifted.

You could place the heavy end of the car over the trailer axle. All you need to do is back the car onto the trailer instead of driving on.

Put the car on the trailer backwards.

I realize this is an old thread and OP is probably already done, however if it hasn't already been mentioned here, you really need to look at the weight ratings here. I was in a similar situation a few months ago and wanted to pull my wife's chevy equinox, however the curb weight of the vehicle plus the empty trailer weight put me over the 6,400 lb tow rating by about 800 lbs. I realize that a mini Cooper is probably not as heavy, but you are still getting dangerously close to the max tow rating, then you have to facor in the payload weight as well.. With the tacoma, I wouldn't want to tow much more than 4,000 lbs loaded to keep a good balance and everything well within limits.

Edit: I see it was discussed already

Considered, but uhaul specifically stated not to do this... plus there are some aero features on the car that I was a little concerned couldn’t withstand sustained 70 mph winds in reverse. I had even considered rolling the car back a few feet and if it was my trailer I probably would have but again, they state to pull the car as far forward as possible.

    Enough for now
Great thread with a lot of good real experience. May end up towing my wife’s Volvo s60 cross country next week, good to know the taco can do it
