To my understanding all ACs are long beds. But I hear where you’re coming from.

Access cab is the best looking cab.

Late to the party but my first Tacoma was an "xtra cab". Regretted it when I found that was always cramming a third person into the rear "seats". Traded it in for a 4Runner.
My current Tacoma is a 4 door (long bed) and except for the crappy job Toyota did on the transmission, it is perfect, for me. Very versatile for people and cargo.
Access Cabs do look awesome though!

Had an access cab, rarely needed the four door. Went Christmas tree hunting with all 4 members of the family. Teenage daughters were crammed into the jump seats. Wife said get a four door. So I did. I miss the long bed more than I need the four doors, but I'm usually the only occupant and I'm hauling air. That being said, I find the four doors marginally more useful than the long-bed, but it's pretty close. If you keep the access cab, rip out the jumpseats and make efficient use of the space. I’m glad I bought a double cab, I love the storage space that it provides for stuff to be secured and locked up. Just minor stuff like groceries and electronics etc. Don’t have to worry about it getting stolen or wet. Plus to have 2 more seats to have people ride with you if you need it is a plus. I can also just drop the tailgate and it’ll become a 6 footbed.

I totally agree on your point about the closed storage. I camp, fish and hunt from early spring to late fall and being able to secure the gear is essential and mandatory in the areas I explore. I like the nice flat storage area in the back of my DC. Theft is not really an issue: unless it's bears that we're talking about! It's so bad this year in the White Mountain National Forest that the mandatoryrule is all food, beverages, toothpaste, trash etc. must be secured in a closed, locked vehicle or hard-sided camper or trailer at all times, no matter where the vehicle is. They also request that any trash go from your vehicle into the dumpsters every night when you turn in. I was told at least one NFS campground is closed up there because of issues with bears due to visitors not following the simple rules.

The storage space isn't really an issue, even a regular cab you can just throw a RTIC cooler in the back and throw groceries in it or electronics, then lock it up and it'll stay dry and secure. Oh and if you drop the gate of an AC, you get a 7.5 ft bed :D just sayin.

Nope, I prefer it as I never have more than 1 passenger. I find the floor behind the driver seat, with the jump seat up, offers more available space than the double cab without the seats down. Plus, I use the full bed for mulch, dirt, sand, etc. quite a bit.

Guess I'm slightly in the wrong gen thread but since you mentioned a new truck, i'll comment(and old thread). I went from a 2000 AC tacoma to a 2021 short bed crew/4 door. For daily driving i love the backseat, can keep my luggage secure, can drive friends/coworkers around and hell i can even drive for UBER. But at the end of the day I am rarely doing any of that as its just me going to work, loading up my motorcycle, mountain bike or the occasional dump run and that longer 6' bed actually would be a world of difference. Going to keep the setup since i love almost everything about it, but if i owned a second vehicle such as a 4 door sedan I would 100% own an access cab because its slightly more functional.

Unless you just opt for the gen 3 Tacoma LB. Only complaint seems to be the turning radius is not as good due to the increased length, no experience there.

I just passed on a 22 double cab LB. Drove one similar liked it but did not love it. If it was on lot, it would have been mine. If I am going to wait, I would prefer to save a little money and MPGs. For the trails on the Double cab long bed, I would steer closer to a 3-inch lift but I think for an AC cab 2 inch lift would be just perfect.

The one option I really like is the removable storage lockers offered on the Trail edition. If it was an option for 6ft beds, I would do it.

as with anything like this, it just depends on your specific situation

so i can speak to my my situation, with a short wife and two (100th percentile height) boys ages 7 and 2, there's no way i would have bought an AC taco. I'm 6' myself, and if my wife was tall i dont think the taco would have worked (rear-facing carseat + tall wife would be cramped in the taco). With that said we have a GX460 for long road trips and as more of a dedicated family rig. But its super nice to have the taco able to handle every day trips and some camping/beach trips for all 4 of us (wife doesnt want sand in her GX). I've also got the long bed because I do a lot of DIY stuff around the house, other family members homes, etc

DCLB taco's are super nice because you get 98% of the daily functionality of a half ton but in a package that is narrow and easy to maneuver in the suburbs/downtown, combined with being super reliable, easy and affordable to maintain and able to hold long-term value.

if i lived in a rural area and didnt spend much time in the burbs/city, i'd have a full size truck. I'll probably have to get one in 7 or 8 years when my 7 year old turns into the giant from jack and the beanstalk but until then I'll enjoy DD'ing the taco

a lot of this depends on your wife/gf's height and how comfortable you want her to be. Happy wife happy life etc etc

I didn't buy until I found a 2.5 AC, passed on dozens of 4 doors. It's my second 2nd gen AC. If I needed another, It'd be the same. AC is Tacoma. No other need apply.

So I suppose I'm no help.

“Sorry, man. Can’t give you a ride. No room.”
    Happy days.

Now with wife/kids/nephew/niece/family we’d only consider a DCLB if headed back to a Tacoma.

That said the 2005-2006 Tundra DC is better than the Taco in every way but turn radius. As close to perfect as a truck gets :)
I miss mine dearly. Stolen and crashed by a drunk driver :(

You are correct! According to the specs page in the 2014 Tacoma sales catalog: 73.5' foot bed standard on the Access cab and the Regular Cab. You can take your pick on the DC. No wonder I have never seen a short bed on an Access Cab. I always as*umed you had your choice of bed length across the entire line-up. That 140" wheelbase LB double-cab must be one fine riding and towing truck. (4th/5th line down) I was looking for one but never saw one. Rare Bird?
