I often wonder what I'd buy if there wasn't such a thing as the Tacoma.... not a pleasant thought!

I would get the TRD sport instead of the off-road package but I would definitely buy again. The only competition is the frontier and it's not even half as pretty as a Taco.

Well, it makes sense you folks like Tacomas so much ... I see bunches of 'em everyday around the SF bay area, new ones too, lots of double cabs around, shorts and some longs.

I dunno. I drive a long way to work and could use MPG better than the 20-21 I'm getting. It's a sweet machine, and I've even modded it, but it's still not attached to me. Maybe I'll get it paid off just in time to buy a Supra. At least it would be fast for the crappy mpg...

I wouldn't call it a regret but I sure wish I could've gotten my Prerunner TRD Sport with the I4 engine. I like the V6 but I don't need it.

no, it's actually a hummer with a prius shell on top. It gets even worse mileage than a hummer.

I love my Taco, the power is there when you need it or just wana give'r. I'm a big guy and have no problem getting in or out of the truck. the fuel mileage is not the best but unless you want to get a civic, smart car, or something gay like that there's not much out there that's going to get you awesome mileage. The only thing i would have gotten different would be the 6 foot box instead of the 5 foot.

First time I've ever seen that. For every one of these, there must be a hundred with 4 cylinders who wish they had a V6.

I think I'd probably go with a Sport package if I did it over again, even though I'm not a big fan of the hood scoop. Of course, that just means I have more money for mods on the current one, though. If Toyota ever freaking offers a diesel Tacoma, I'll be buying one ASAP.

I'm on my 4th Tacoma size Toyota truck. I used to trade every two years or until the ash tray got full. Well I had my last one 9 years and I gave up smoking longer than that. So far I've had a '84, '89, '99, and now the '08. Just got the TSB done yesterday and now I am impressed with the newest as well. It has comfort and power that is far better than all the others, and I'm getting 18+ mpg with around town driving. I hope I'm around for number 5 & 6! ;)

Pardon my candor, and I may get flamed but I believe my 83 toy was a far better truck than my 99. The first thing I noticed when I purchased the tacoma was it was no longer able to travel the same dirt roads with the same degree of control given the same speeds. Secondly, the tacoma no longer had a fully boxed frame. Finally, even given a weight reduction, the tacoma gets poorer fuel economy. In all honesty this will be my last tacoma given the newer vehicles are just too large and get even worse fuel economy. If Toyota starts providing the US with the smaller and more efficient turbo-diesel trucks it provides the rest of the world, I might just reconsider. Otherwise, I will keep this truck until I longer need to haul hay or the wheels fall off. Honestly, if your truck is not too rusted and you have the skills, rebuild it and wait for a modern diesel ... this country really needs to catch up with the rest of the world.

For the sake of the comments that immediately followed this posting, I will attempt to clarify and justify my posting. First, regarding our need to "catch up": Oil refineries tend to fall into either catalytic cracking or hydrocracking. Most US refineries are set up for catalytic cracking, which turns each barrel of crude oil into roughly 50-percent gasoline, 15-percent diesel, and the remainder into a variety of petroleum products, e.g. jet fuel, home heating oil, heavy fuel oil, liquefied petroleum gas. In Europe and most of the rest of the world, refineries use a hydrocracking process, which produces about 25-percent gasoline and 25-percent diesel from a barrel of oil. So the rest of the world is already maximizing diesel production. Furthermore, unlike other countries where fuel efficiency is encouraged, the US Federal excise tax on diesel fuel is about 6 cents higher per gallon than the tax on gasoline. Ultimately, we at best see a ten percent efficiency in diesel over gasoline when these other factors, such as refining are included. But, beyond the economics of diesel, there is also the issue of driveability. The diesel engine is typically more robust in design due to the higher combustion pressures and the torque curve occurs at a much lower rpm than gasoline engines. Hence, the torque occurs when and where you need it and the engine lasts longer. I drive and maintain both diesel and gassers ... and modern diesels are just way more efficient than the gassers e.g. gassers are just beginning to see direct injection something that has existed for decades on diesels. Check out Toyota 4 cylinder diesels and you will see 6 cylinder torque with fuel economy in the 30 MPG range. Expect to see US diesels appearing late 2009 into 2010.

Secondly, concerning the gas engine economy. No I have never attained much better than 25 MPG in the tacoma. But a six bolt is never going to come close to a five bolt simply because there is more parasitic drag and unsprung weight. I did, however, typically get about 2 to 3 MPG better fuel economy with the older toy. I would encourage a look at fueleconomy.gov for a somewhat unbiased presentation of fuel expectations.
