    The heat sink is needed because while the "bulb" (aka LED diode) is cooler, the driver still gets warm.

    You can see my comparison of the Philips H4 LEDs to a halogen upgrade below. Note the Philips LEDs look to be for right hand drive vehicles, meaning the cut off angles are reversed to what they should be.

    The led does put off heat but it's mainly the driver for the led producing the heat.
