Just currious how many people write their congressman on issues or concerns they have on recent events such as immigration or gun laws?

I am wanting to write mine but have never done so before. Im not really sure what all I should include or how long or detailed it should be?
    Any help would be great.

Please dont debate or argue about events in here. I just need advice or and ideas on the topic.:p

I have written mine a couple of times, but I always get a pre drafted response back. They hear complaints on the same issue from so many people that they just send the same letter to everyone.

I dont necessarily care about getting a real response back. I just want to let the higher ups know how I feel about certain issues.

I write, call, and talk in person to my representatives. Let me tell you the most effective way to communicate with them...simply handwrite a letter but keep it to 2 sentences. They will know you are serious because it wont be an e-mail and 2 sentences will be short enough to read in 10 seconds. You will get the best response using this method.

Let us know how it turns out!

I did on several congressional laws. I did it through email and NRA newsletters. You can go to your state website. ex www.maryland.gov to write them. make sure you use the specific SB you oppose. I even wrote the big man in the white house about healthcare, I got an automated email that said that healthcare reform is the way to go and answered none of my questions. It seemed very communistic in my opinion.

If you DON'T write/e-mail/call/talk to them- They certainly won't take note of your feelings or opinions.

If you DO provide them some form of feedback- They may not read every single word of every single letter- but they will use them for data points and information when they start considering new legislation.

I would say be as detailed as you want. If you have a strong opinion/argument- Lay it all out. Maybe that'll be the point of view that makes a difference. I've sent a few letters in my time. Can't say I remember even getting canned responses...but at least I tried.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
Just state your name, where you live (city/town is fine) and your age. Then be concise and factual about your stand on the issue(s) and what you would like done. Always back your data (if stating any) with sources.

Don't state your party affiliation even though it shouldn't matter.

    That's my advice.

I did get a non automated email response from a senator. It was really nice and they kindly informed me that the bill that I was opposed to was being voted on in the house and not in senate. But it was not condesending.

When I've done it I've tried to write about one specific topic. I think you could do it that way or cover multiple topics. Probably don't want it to get too lengthy. I've always gotten preformatted response letters, so I'm not really sure if they actually read the letters or if it's some aid responded with an already written letter. It can be somewhat less than satisfying, but at least I voiced my opinion to my representatives which is more than most do. I hope you get good responses.

If they are campaigning they may read an e-mail...otherwise if you want them to read your correspondence it should be hand written. If it's not worth the effort to hand write them they feel like it must not be important.

I've done it before, a couple times.

Most folks have a website with a form you can free-text into. You get a form email in response.

I've also hand written letters. Those at least got typed snail-mail responses. I can't say my letter ever actually was read by a senator or Congressman, but at least they got it!

I've heard that for each hand-written letter, there are 10 typed. That was something I heard in the days before email.

If you want to truly write them, their addresses are in the yellow pages, in the section before the listings really start.
