Diode is to stop you powering the reverse lights through the harness. In stock wiring form "Camera on", a 12v single is sent to the headhunt from the reverse lights, to tell the HU to "switch camera on". To fake this, so the head unit switches to camera, you simply apply 12v to that wire from a different source. But, doing that will back-power the reverse lights, so a diode is used to stop that happening.

If the diode is buggered, it'll stop the true reverse signal getting to the HU from the reverse lights and you'll get the symptom you describe, reverse camera doesn't work when putting it into reverse.

Ultimately, as you've found out a diode is probably not the best way to achieve this with the Tacoma's finicky wiring, a simple double throw on/on switch would be far superior. Simply wire the HU to the common terminal, and reverse light to one of the ON terminals, and the constant 12+ (fake) to the other ON terminal. That way no diode and physical brake in the wiring back to the reverse lamps.

 

As of right now, the wiring harness you get with the full kit will not fit the connectors on a 2020 Tacoma because the head unit has changed. I have emailed anytimebackupcamera.com and asked about a fix. I will reply if anything changes.

 

Sorry if it’s been mentioned before, but it’s late and I couldn’t look through 38 pages. Will this work in an aftermarket hu? It seems like most everybody is using this in newer Tacomas. I’ve got an ‘06 and just installed a Pioneer deck and I’m looking to add backup and front cameras and would love to do this.

Cant answer your 06 question, but i just installed the android t9 unit, and it all functions normally with the new head unit. If the mod is compatible for the harness of an 06, it should work

 

Has anyone swapped out the included front camera for a better quality one? If so, which camera and was it plug and play to the existing kit?

 

This one works much better and is able to actually show more depth and texture than the stock one.

The stock camera is a little narrow. Can one of you guys post a picture how it looks on you’re head unit?

 

Finding a camera that works seems harder than it should haha. I just want one that I can adjust the aim on (preferably to aim it lower when on trails so I can see things if I'm climbing an incline).

I found a few options that allow me to bend the mounting bracket or has a built in adjuster, BUT it looks like it doesn't have the 4 pin barrel looking connector that plugs into the Anytime backup harness.

 

What 4 pin connector? My kit uses RCA and a relay to pipe input to the head unit.

Oh right. That's part of the Nakita camera I got. Are you looking for something you manually adjust outside of the truck based on needs? As opposed to something you control electronically.

 

Yes, manual adjustment is fine.

 

I think the Nakita would still be a good choice. I have an OR grille and used a cheap flat metal fence bracket to secure the camera. Sprayed it with black truck bed before mounting. Between the profile of the grille and the bracket, I was able to get good adjustment for a view I wanted with just a portion of the front bumper visible.

 

I did the same, simple backing plate. Looks good

 

I have the same camera connector on the Nakita camera that I used on my SR5.

Have camera adjusted for a similar view.
