I do not have side cams. I am able to select reverse or front (aftermarket camera) any time.

Did you already have a forward facing camera (aka the Multi Terain setup) or did you have to install the one from the kit?

Edit - looks like you were answering the question while I typed up mine

All I had is reverse. In Toyota's infinite wisdom, they did not offer the MTM/panoramic cameras for access cab.

Access cab is second class citizen... even though it’s the best looking.

Right? But apparently the Limited doesn't include the panoramic cameras either. Not sure who was drunk at Toyota that came up with the model offerings.

i could assume that choosing forward will light up the mirror cams too but even if it the sides don’t work I can see the benefits of this system and will buy soon.
thanks for all the input, it really helps

I don't think it's designed to work with the OEM cams like that. You could use it to activate your rear cam probably. I'm not sure how the MTM cameras work, if you could fake the rear camera activating then press a button on the screen to turn on the panoramic cameras, that would work perfectly and you wouldn't need anything but a literal anytime backup camera.

This works by faking a reverse light signal to the head unit, and with the front cam it "swaps" the signal to the front aftermarket camera. Maybe Brian would be interested in making an "anytime camera" set up, which if the MTM cameras work how I described (I briefly test drove a 2020 OR, so I'm fuzzy on it) it would be even easier to make.

So are we are saying is if someone has the OEM forward facing camera, we still need to install the one found in the ABC kit? This is exactly what I’m trying to avoid, having to install a second camera up front if at all possible.

I replied to your PM, but if anyone else has trouble try teflon tape! DO NOT try and crush the nut...or have a new nut and a hacksaw ready. :annoyed:

This kit as it sits is meant for 2020s without the front and side (MTM or panoramic) cameras. If you want to make it work that way you would have to add another camera, yes.

However, dependent on the function of the MTM system, being able to activate them at any time wouldn't be too complicated. I just don't know how they work. I thought you could turn them on at any time? Isn't that what they're supposed to be for?

Exactly except there is a 5mph or below limit on that function. Was hoping to gain use of the cameras at anytime from this kit. :(

Looks like I’ll have to try and return for a refund or sell the kit I have.

Just spit balling, but if there's a speed limit, maybe that can be solved as the navigation override solved that particular problem: determine if a wire sends a signal to the HU which triggers it to lockout the MTM, then place a switch inline. Dumb that they did that to begin with, but it was undoubtedly for liability reasons.

I like the idea, I’m just not too technically savvy with electrical work

I'd start by analyzing electrical schematics which might show us a wire that matches. Then it'd be a matter of removing it temporarily to see if that solves the problem. But I wonder if it is indeed using a wire. Or if it's using a discrete voltage (on or off, essentially) or if it's a software lockout. So many ways Toyota could've skinned this car.

How do you activate the cameras? Is there a switch?

There is a switch on the left side of the steering wheel. When in D you ca. Cycle through forward / overhead and the underneath cameras. Once you exceed 5mph, the forward/underneath cam will switch to standard head unit functions. When in R it automatically pops up the rear camera, and you can not cycle to the other cams.

I could rant about control of the cameras being taken from the user but I won't. It would be cool to incorporate additional cameras via a selector, though. Should be possible but we'd need something besides a single relay for input handling. And then we'd need a fancy rotary switch or something to select a camera.
