So i learned some things about 3.4s in my extensive research about my check engine light

The coolant temp sensor is bad. It keeps giving the ECM a bad reading on engine temps, thus the motor runs rich and burns up the O2 sensors/cats

Its been like this for so long that the cats will need replaced. But i’m not replacing them until after i replace the coolant temp sensor and the upstream o2 sensor. After i do that, the motor should run correctly and then the bad cats will cause the downstream o2 sensor to fail telling me its finally time to finish fixing the exhaust. Thats my plan and i’m sticking to it. Ordering a temp sensor.

Stuck thermostat typically sets that code.

Or the ect is reading incorrectly.

Think it might be stuck open? Because this thing heats up and cools just fine....

stuck open will eventually reach operating temp. but it takes longer. which in turn throws that code. how long does it take to make it to the operating temp on the gauge.

    Very quick. Completely normal.

I’m almost certain its the coolant temp sensor on the intake by the fuel rails

Ah if it’s warming up quick it’s probably that sensor. Live data should show it

i have the older version of the one you have. should have live data. The engine ECT sensor will show up as ECT. ideally 180-200 ish is what your looking for. the gauge sensor is the one at the back of the engine so the only way to see the computers ECT sensor is with the scan tool

Just drove it two towns over to class without issue....so maybe i should wait until the alternator shows a bigger problem?

Or when it starts getting colder maybe it’ll die

Picked up a duralast coolant temp sensor today. Gonna slap that in later.

Also my O2 sensor and gasket should be here tomorrow

went ahead and replaced the coolant temp sensor. Took maybe 15 minutes.

Cleared the codes and drove it back and forth between the next town over. Varying speed and load. No more check engine light. I hope it was that simple.

I think i’ll still go ahead and replace the o2 sensor when i get it just to be safe. Its leaking around the one thats in there anyway. So i might as well. Its already paid for.

Alternator howling is also getting worse. So i might as well just order one of those too
