IMHO this is a poor field study comparison. Totally different intake systems coupled with different air cleaners positions and one is half the size of the other. 2nd comment the guy with the snorkel was ahead of the other guy almost all the time as he cited.

Anyway its not a big deal, I just do not see them being worth what they sell them for. Maybe for a very very select few in some harsh dust areas. Here in Thailand there is little dust, mostly mud and water. I thought originally they installed them here for all the river crossings and flooding we tend to be exposed to on a regular basis but none raised their exhaust so its moot.

But in fairness to all, not all we do to our trucks is to really make a performance difference, we do it to customize it to our liking. If you like a snorkel, more power to you.:)

Some of us had to get the fender liner out to fit bigger tires :)

The tires also kick up dust and dirt everywhere. It gets awfully dusty under the hood.

Damn, they beat us to the market!! We were just about to release our snorkel for the 2009 2 Wheel Drive Tacomas, but I guess we have no choice but to show it here now. Let me know what you think!!!!

The main idea behind this snorkel is that the 2WD Tacoma is grossly underrated for it's ability to put ugly parts on, so we definitely didn't want to sit by and let everyone else make ugly parts for trucks, and leave this little guy out. Also, everyone knows that when it rains in the desert (as seen in the photo), you don't want any of that rain getting into your air intake, especially since you run without an air filter in your 4 cylinder to gain more HP. The list of benefits go on and on, so I'll let you guys check it out and discuss.

    Part number: POS123
    Price: $12.00
Free Shipping to your local Home Depot or Lowes store.

Why is that? The exhaust is exhaling.

I find these snorkel threads quite amusing! I have seen these debates on the 1st gen, 2nd gen, and landcruiser forum and now the 3rd gen forums.
For me the snorkel is no different than say a winch, you may use it once a year or maybe never but when you need it your sure glad it's there!
I try to avoid deep water crossing if possible as there is much more prep than simply adding a snorkel but if you take your rig off road and exploring sometimes they are unavoidable!
If one has the slightest clue on how an intake and engine works it is obvious there are major benefits to running a snorkel if your vehicle sees a lot of off road use!
One thing I find funny is when people mock others for having a snorkel in the desert, I even had someone post a pic of my 100 series diving through Mojave mocking me for having a snorkel in the desert, well that trip to Mojave was one of the main times I would have been stranded from a water crossing.
I was headed out into the desert with my family mid August, the weather was clear and hot, we crossed 2 dry wash bed and there was not a cloud in sight. About and hour into the dirt the clouds rolled in very quickly! Within 10 minutes we were in the worst thunder storm we had seen.
We were stuck in the middle of two dry washes that were now raging rivers, we quickly turned around as we knew what was behind us. That dry wash we crossed was now going to be the worst river crossing I have ever encountered! Water was well over the hood and even washing up the windshield. If I did not have a snorkel I would have likely been stranded with a hydro locked motor with my entire family in the middle of the desert.
For me off-roading/over landing is all about being prepared and ready for the unexpected. Most of the stuff I have on and in my rigs are often not needed or used but when something unexpected happens I will be ready for it.

It's simple really, if you don't see a need for a snorkel don't get one.
    My 2 cents.

I must say its much bulkier than I was expecting but these are not bought for looks (which some of you may think) you could do much better visually for $525! this is a functional modification in which only 5-10% of members on here would actually use it for its intended purpose... while I think they look cool it should be function over looks any day of the week IMO...

Good points. Remember when all winches were $1000 and not too many bought them, but then all of a sudden they were $500 and then $300, so more people were able to buy them (especially Jeepers), just to complete "the look". Many Land Cruiser customers have bought snorkels from me before to complete that whole African-safari-jungle-I can go anywhere kind of look.

So are you going to offer a snorkel for the 3rd gen? You have the truck now get on it :) let's see one a little less bulky and 1/2 the cost.

Yeah. 2nd gen is going into production now. The drawings look really nice. Less bulky, not as phat, and not as expensive. Once we get that here, we can see what it would take to make a 3rd gen.

Most every one on this forum has done a mod that has no function and is strictly for looks.
If you want to admit it or not looks are important to all of us.
    Myself included.
I could care less if Someone installs a snorkel for looks or function, if that person is happy with the mod its a good mod in my book.

I remain unconvinced about the claimed benefits of snorkels.

If you forge water deep enough to need it, then by all mean go for it. Just don't forget the other mods that you'll likely need at that water height (breathers, fortified ECU/electrical, fan disconnect to name a few).

The rest of the claimed benefits are weak. Manufacturers go to extreme lengths and expense to improve fuel efficiency by fractions of a gallon. If putting induction up high had any such benefits you'd see it integrated in designs. The cleaner air argument is also suspect. Take a look at the inside of your fender after a long trip in a dusty environment and compare it to dust accumulated at your A-pillar or what is just stuck on the outside of your fender. There's your answer.

I guess it started back when trucks used this for their air intakes, and still a lot do to this day. There are benefits in collecting air up high (even for highway use) as opposed to down low.

But I also agree that modern air intakes have come a long way, especially with dust separators in-line and lower areas to catch that dust before it hits the filter.

Stu you should do a thread on just the install if you haven't already posted pics of it.

I saw this in related videos and this dude is a jackass. Not to mention the "tow strap" that snapped and could've wacked someone in the face.

I believe in the science behind snorkels. I've had one one my FJ Cruiser for several years and it's helped with everyday driving besides being on trails. My air box was clean during the heavy pollen season and helped with crossing lightly flooded streets here in FL that other vehicles hydrolocked themselves in after rain storms.

Toyota's overseas come with them stock. If they didn't offer benefits, why would Toyota waste money putting them on?

Ain't no way I'm driving my $35K vehicle in water that high, unless I'm being chased by those bad hombres ol' Trump keeps talking about.
