Ooh you cut even more than me. I kept the front radiator support and what not and just tied it into the engine cage.

I had cracks and bends going back to where I cut. Gotta clean up the edge a little and figure out a good tie in point for the tube to support the rad, headlights and fenders.

I meant up front. I actually went back probably 6” more than you there. I had very minor cracking up front so I straightened it and welded it back so I didn’t have to figure out all of the mounting points lol.

Reconnected and tied the new supports to the cage.

Yeah, that front plate and rad support on mine was totally fucked. That's what started the whole adventure.

That and my wheels rubbing the shit out of the fender wells at full stuff.

You planning on tubbing the firewall?

No, I'm going into build custom arms to move the spindle forward and take the up-travel caster out of the UCA mount with custom mounts.

Hopefully I can clear 37s without tubbing.

Isn't the rad support mounted on the body though? And I assume the engine cage is tied to the frame, are you concerned about cracking due to flex in the body mounts?

Assuming you got it back from the frame shop. Can't wait to see the final product. Interesting things going on.

Not really since I switched to poly bushings. They’re way stiffer than the stock ones.

I'd still assume there is some flex, definitely would be interested in how it goes. Something I never considered till I heard of a 3rd gen 4runner on the ifs offroad forum who tied his hood pins to his engine cage and had them snap due to flex eventually.

6months and no issues yet lol. We’ll see how things look in a few years. As for the hood pins snapping, the engine cage is exactly where I’d want to mount them (and where I did mine). Engine cage, roll cage, and frame should not have any flex when done right. Don’t want those things flexing if they’re supposed to be structural

It didn't, that's the problem lol but his body did via the body mounts which the hood is attached to, hence the snapage.

Gotcha. Yeah my body is welded to the car which is welded to the frame. No flexing going on at the body mounts for me lol

No, poly cab mounts but what difference does it make when the cab is welded to the frame lol

I will not be welding the body to the frame, so I am concerned about cracking between the body mounted stuff and the frame/cage mounted stuff.

I'm thinking the rad will be mounted to the engine cage, and the fenders/headlights/hood/grill will be mounted on the body. I'll have to use some poly bushings up front, but I already cut off the mounts on both sides (body and frame), so I have to build those from scratch.

Since a total front end rebuild is is in the works anyway, why not a side project to build new control arms too.IMG_20200329_165336_593.jpg
Incidentally, I'll have a full Dirt King mid travel set for sale soon.

@ChadsPride That's the prototype MT arm, compatible with aftermarket UCAs, or I'll have a matched one to go with it.
