I'm in need of a new engine and heard something about these used engines from Japan that are sent over to the states and have nothing wrong with them. Does anyone have any experiece with these, good or bad? I've found places to get these and they offer 6 month/6,000 mile warranties for about $1,800. I'm trying to decide if new or used makes more sense.

Ever heard of a 2JZ motor? Tons of people buy them just like you mentioned.

"JDM" is short for Japanese Domestic Market. I understand that Japan has far stricter rules than the U.S. for emissions compliance -- they don't go by actual emissions/exhaust analysis like we do during a smog check, they go by the number of miles (km) on the engine. So you can get a real good JDM motor if it's been maintained properly, but it may not have all the necessary equipment or design features to be legal here in the states. (Different vehicles have different features and design based on the intended region where it'll be sold and used.) That's really all I know, hope it helps.
