I'm with you OP. I have had so many vehicles and I got mod happy on a few, luckily this was about a decade ago when I realized it was just a money waster.

Now I keep it simple with a one time $1800-$2300 mod budget (I've done it with less... around the $1200 mark).

    For me:
Spacer/Tapered block Levelling kit ($350ish total with alignment)
Slightly Larger Tires -265/70/17 (750ish installed)
    Tint front side windows ($50)
    12v Solutions Remote Start ($300)
    Kicker Speakers upgrade. ($350)
    Done.

After that I would just be fukcing around really. Luckily my truck came with running boards and a tonneau cover.

I totally agree although I probably look like that guy when I drive to work . I built my truck for our annual camping trip on a deserted island and a couple big camping trips in 4x4 only locations during the remainder. The only purchase that is a cosmetic accent is the grille. I got rear ended and replaced my rear bumper with a swingout that we use to cook on and prepare food and it raises the spare for departure angle. Sliders because that's probably the safest mod considering I've high centered and saved the rockers . Front bumper for the winch in case I need to deadman winch out of sand or water crossings. Ofcourse big tires and lift for ease of travel on sand . Bought a used tepui and made my own bed rack . We literally use it all . Lighting and little nick nack stuff is not important to me . Like a trailer brake setup I guess it's all what you use it for .
I'm sure I get comments when I drive to work on the freeway but I dont care . I use it all and I'm making incredible memories for my wife our two sons and I .They love it.

I also find weird uses for it.

I’m even worse with wasted money as I’m leasing my truck! What?
1250 for wheels and tires (sold stock for $950) net spent $300
Rockford speakers front and back $100
Bed mat $100 had rewards points from a card (net spent 0)
    Tint front windows $60
    Front lift/level $340
    Pro grill/knockoff $73
Steps $270 (5 year old needed then)
Total 1150 ish. Worth it to enjoy the truck for 3 years or less and then get $2500 or so back when I sell it outright instead of turn it back in? (27,500 residual and will be worth around 30)
I think so. These mods make it more enjoyable while I own it.

I also agree. I think alot of people have unrealistic expectations of their trucks. A stock Tacoma will do fine on your average logging road, better tires will help. When I say better, I dont mean 35" mud tires with spacers.
What alot of people consider a 4x4 adventure, is what some of us consider an average drive around the ranch. If it makes you happy, then so be it. I have a winch on my truck, do i use it everyday, thankfully not. It does get used, and is has helped me and a few others get of more than a few binds.

That's not really the point of this thread..... I really think we just get sold on some idea that we need "mod x" and it seems that that mod is only to extract dollars from us.

I kind of think sometimes we are only spending money to spend money with some of the mods. I'm not thinking of mods that provide some measureable benefit like body protection or interior protection or lifts or big tires or wheels. I'm talking about mods that are like "I really just could have left this stock and not really known the difference."

Of course it's in the eye of the beholder.

See, a mod list like this I can understand. Some of those mods I wouldn't bother with, but I can totally get why someone would.... I see benefit to doing them.

Other mods (not in the above list) are like cheap trinkets that don't really do anything different or don't add performance over the original design.

go without floor mats for 10 years then look at a truck that did. I think yours will be of less value.

But back to OP. You aren't going fast enough to need windshield mounted LED bars.

I feel like external bypass shocks to the tune of 4k+ are a little overboard. Like people feel like it's a necessity . Most people dont go 60mph + over whoops in a brand new truck across the dunes. It seems like more of a light weight rail buggy thing to me but to each there own. It doesn't bother me. Maybe I'm just a little more cautious.

I've been around a while (20 years maybe?) at many different car/truck/classic/jeep/tacoma web forums. I've never seen the energy given to money (cost of things) as I see on the TW. I really don't understand it. It doesn't bother me, I just don't understand it. Why does everyone want to know the cost of everything? and so many judge others by the cost? "That lift is too inexpensive!" "That lift is too expensive!" "buy once, cry once". There is no crying in re-moding. I really don't get it.

Serious question: Why do people care how much money others spend on their Tacoma? From purchase price to mod cost. And then judge if it is too little or too much. Is is simply a way to put others down to make our ego feel better?

Edit: And what does it mean to "waste money"? I don't get that either, if we want to spend money in any-way-shape-or-form, how is that a waste? Maybe it a waste if is just sits in my bank account and doesn't "work" for me.
