Someone was telling me toyota revised the owners manual for the 2nd gen 4.0 trucks
Now were supposed to be using 5 and half quarts when doing oil change with filter?
Ive been using 5 quarts 10 ounces for the last 10 years with no problems,so not sure why I would change how much oil to put in. Anbody heard of toyota revising the owners manual to use 5.5 us quarts of oil? thanks for any info...

But doesn't 5.5 put us way over the full mark?

My '15 PreRunner V6 is the first Toyota I've owned that has oil right at the full mark using 5.5 qts. According to my owners manual, some use 4.8 qts.

    Check the owners manual.

My owners manual (and Chilton's) says 5.5 with filter but capacities called out are approximate... you add as necessary to bring to appropriate levels. For the engine oil that's between the 2 marks on the dip stick. My truck takes around 5.2 quarts to get to the top line on the stick... 5.5 takes it over.

I usually put in 5 quarts and I'm right between the two dots on the dip stick.

This, makes it especially easy when you buy 5qt jugs o oil... no half quarts laying around etc. Its about 1/4in below the top full mark and im fine with that.

About 5.25 puts it right at the full mark on mine.

5.5 on the dot every time, puts it to the full mark on the dipstick.

    4wd v6 and v6 PreRunner are 5.5 - other v6 (probably only X-Runner) has different oil pan for 4.8.

I always dump some clean oil in when I have the plug and filter out, and let it run out the bottom clean. I count that out of the half, so, I guess mine is less than 5.5.....

4.0 V6 here. First oil change I added 5.5 quarts as manual stated, was way over filled according to the stick. Next change added 5 quarts, checked it the next morning and was just above the top fill line. So 5 for me.

Is the pan off or are the dipsticks off? I'm one that believes between the lines is better than over the line. @ 5 quarts I'm still just above the line but living with it.

No, I do not use 5.5 quarts. I use 5.2 litres. It is not a 4.18 qt. engine, it is a 3.956 Litre engine. :ohsnap:

Oil cooler on factory tow package trucks might make it a little different, too.

I lift the front end slightly to make sure the drain hole is at the low point, then drain it warm. I get a 1/2qt. more out that way. It takes 5.0 US quarts, which puts it just below the full mark. I know guys who fill it, start it, check for leaks, turn it off, and immediately check it. Can't get a correct reading unless you let it settle. I check mine hours later, maybe even the next day. It doesn't need to be exactly on the full mark to be ok. That extra quart is expensive.
