Not worth the trouble retrofitting it since it’s tied into TSS and utilizes the cameras up front.

FWIW I never use it. Maaaybe useful for long stretches of interstate at night? But in the city, streetlights and your own high beams reflecting off road signs trigger the AHB to turn the high beams off.

His 2016 doesn't have TSS, but still not worth doing. Tons of threads about "I fucked with my lights, and now my truck doesn't work"

It is not tied to TSS. His is a 2016, which is prior to TSS anyway. It does use a light sensor that would be located on the RH dash speaker (there is a blank there for those without). However, my understanding is that there is a good bit more to it than just a sensor and the light switch. Much of it is not present in trim without the Premium package. As nice as it sounds, not worth the effort/risk/reward.

Not too many threads about this. The technology is too sensitive. The lights stay off 95% of the time. I turned it off and no longer use it. Not worth the headache in my opinion.

Toyota still doesn’t have the bugs worked out on this feature. My Mercedes is 100% on dimming when it should, I don’t even have to look anymore. But the Tacoma is about 75%, just enough to annoy me when getting flashed by other drivers.

That’s kinda what I’d figured. I do tons of long distance driving though so that’s why I asked.

I meant since his doesn’t have TSS, it’d be more intensive to retrofit in.

Ah, I thought it was all tied in together since it’s a safety feature that started in 2018 as well. Good catch.

The problem is since all cars don't have it, the truck will turn off the highs and you still get high beamed. You can't even flick em back to high to remind the other driver, since the switch is under the left side dash.

You can still flash people but you have to pull the headlight stalk back towards you through the low beam position and to the intermittent position. Then you have to remember to put it back into auto high beam mode.

My issue with the system is that it will recognize tail lights and dim the highs for cars in that are in front of you...but when passing a longer transport it puts the highs back on about halfway along blinding the poor bugger when you're right beside him.
It also won't dim the highs prior to seeing the other car such as when cresting a hill or on narrow twisties. Better to take over and do it yourself. I always found that when I start forgetting to dim the lights it meant I was getting tired and it was time for a break.

I wish mine would auto come on when I’m passing idiots who put HIDs in their reflector housing. They are complete assholes. I usually keep my highs on when I see them.

Whoops! I mis-read this thread as the auto headlights that are part of the Premium package. This is in reference to the auto high beams. That is a totally different animal and I have not looked into that as it was on both my vehicles (2018 SR5 and OR). Others may be right that it involves the TSS as I'm not sure where light sourcing would be otherwise, since it references field of view.
