i recently bought a 2014 tacoma 2wd sport. From my understanding the sports come with limit slip? when i jack my truck up and turn on the "auto LSD" i spin my tires and they still spin the opposite direction ? i thought if i had a limit slip they should spin the same direction.. maybe my auto lsd isn't activating or do i have to do something to activate it? thank you!

The LSD in a Tacoma is computer/brake controlled. It's not mechanical. In other words... it's not a real Limited Slip Differential.

not really, the brake controlled LSD does the exact same thing as a real LSD its just more clever. brake pads are a lot cheaper to replace than a differential clutch

So our differential are open. Assuming you know what that means, power from the driveshaft flows through the path of least resistance. So to paint a visual picture. If you are on the trail in 2wd and you have your right wheel in the air. All your power is going to go to that wheel in the air because that is the path of least resistance. The Tacoma LSD (called "Auto LSD" in 2wd or TRAC in 4H) applies the brake to the wheel spinning to add resistance. This disperses power at the differential giving the wheel that is stuck more power.

The only "real" (clutch type) Tacoma LSDs were only installed from 2005-2008. 2009+ got the "computer controlled" LSDs.

Ok well at some point between the years 2007 - 2010 (apparently no one quite knows). Toyota switched to this brake controlled LSD. before the differentials were the typical clutch based LSD.

I bought this 2013 sr5 last year so all this is very confusing, by happen stance I used the auto LSD to back up my snow covered driveway and was amazed at how the truck got traction without using 4wd my other trucks I would use 4wd after spinning in 2wd

Wait, so my '08 that has an LSD sticker on the rear diff is most likely a real LSD chunk? Wow, I just assumed it was ABS.

Ya you should be fine. In regards to your original question. when on jack stands the wheels will turn opposite directions and that's normal. because the spider gears inside the differential are turning but not the rack and pinion gears. This causes the wheels to spin opposite.

E-LSD sucks. Every other manufacturer just calls this "traction control". Give me a tru trac or Detroit any day over this crap

Nope. That sticker means you have an LSD cause you have to fill it with LSD additive in the gear oil

Crap, I changed my diff fluid a few years ago and can't remember if I added that or not. Haven't needed traction control since. I guess the best I can do is change it again and be sure to include the additive. Dang it. Oh well, what's done is done.
