Hi all, I’m new to the forum. I have a 2018 Tacoma with an AT and 31k miles. I’m looking at trading in in for a 2018 with a manual trans with 45k miles. The dealer wants $30k and has offered me 27k for mine. What are your thoughts?

yours is worth more than theirs. Autos sell way faster than manuals, they should be paying you.

Only about 18% of the population of America can drive a stick, so selling a manual you have to wait till the buyer shows up, with a auto, 100% of the driving population knows how to drive it.

Thank you, It’s hard to find a manual trans now. 25 years ago most were manual. Funny how things change.

Dealer is only going to make a deal if they can make money. I've had some luck in the past fully detailing a vehicle and asking for a straight up trade fully knowing in terms of value I was losing $1000ish. I wanted something different and that was the price to do it. You market your vehicle as ready to sale, all we are doing is swapping titles and dealer is getting the better value.

Also consider state tax rules. In some, you can sell private, and buy within a time frame and only owe tax on the value difference. Others it has to be one single transaction. Just depending you could end up with the truck you want and some cash in the pocket for mods.

Manuals are also harder to find and thus more in demand to a smaller group of people.

I respectfully disagree. In this case we do not know what trim level and packages the OP has on his Tacoma vs the trim level and packages that are on the Dealer’s Tacoma. Further, even if 100% of the people can drive an Automatic, not 100% want an automatic. In the last 25 years automatics have been foisted on many buyers like me that want a manual, making manuals scarce and much sought after by those who want them. I have waited almost 3 months for my manual which will be delivered next week. If I wanted a similarly equipped automatic, I could have had it in September. Also, I just sold my 2006 Nissan Xterra with 305,000 miles on it for $3,000. I never would have gotten that if it was an automatic. Just my opinion.

you will find yourself driving slower than whale driving auto. And choosing your gears. And being sporty when you want and cruise when you want... you will enjoy it!

I did it a year ago and do not regret it.

There's a reason manuals went away. You can hang on but eventually you'll see the errors in your ways.

This thread will get interesting with the MT guys chiming in :argue: . As far as the OP it's going to be hard to get a fair deal off the dealer .

Losing money and getting a truck with more miles, just to go to manual? I hope you are dying to drive a manual, because it wouldn’t be worth it otherwise.

Its more about how fast they sell a truck. If a auto sits on the lot for 2 days before it sells, then they can replace it and sell another. But if a manual has to wait for someone looking for a manual, then it will sit for maybe 6 days. In that time they could of sold 3 autos. The faster you can turn over cars the more money you make and if you offer a car that can sell 100% of the time right away vs 18% of the time then the value for the dealer is in the auto.

But @Barrister, you bring up a good point about trim levels. It seems the OP has a offroad access cab, so if the new truck is also a access cab then his is worth more, but if the new truck is a double cab, then yes the new should be more than his. In the long run, yes a manual can be worth more just due to life of a manual vs a auto, but sub 200k miles it shouldnt matter too much

Think of it as a pizza store. They sell cheese pizza and broccoli pizza. Sure broccoli pizza is rare, but finding someone who likes broccoli pizza is much harder than finding someone who likes cheese pizza.
If they could sell 4 pizzas a day, they had 3 cheese and 1 broccoli, they sell out of the cheese, but no one wants the broccoli that day. Well then they lost a sale of a cheese pizza. Remember, dealers have a limited amount of lot space for used cars.

Another thing to keep in mind is that from the factory, a manual transmission truck costs $1950 less than the same truck as a automatic. Looking at the builder online, the cost difference from a access cab auto to a manual double cab (same other trim offroad to offroad) is only $450 in favor of the access cab being worth more.

Additional factors are 31k miles vs 45k miles, his truck comes up worth more.
31k mile truck can be preown certified and sell for a premium over the 45k one can be.

Broccoli pizza with either cream cheese or alfredo as the sauce is freakin delicious.

What model of Tacoma are you trading for what model of Tacoma? That could make a big difference. Say you had an SR and were trading for a Pro, or vice versa.

    Americans are lazy?

OP - I wouldn't pay extra for a manual with more miles (All other things being equal). The dealer is definitely getting the better deal here.

Who says they've gone away? When I was looking for my Taco an MT was a must-have. At the time when I was looking (last March) a Toyota dealer 5 mins from me had a handful of them available. A week later all of them were gone so someone is still buying them.

But what do I know? I still play with classic cars, motorcycles and ATV's. All of which require the use of a clutch and a gearshift :burnrubber:

I wouldn't make the trade. Your truck is worth more today, and will always be worth more even 10 years from now. The way taxes work here in GA I'd have to pay the $3000+$225 in taxes + $20 tag fee if I were to take that trade. And knowing dealers I'm sure there would be some hidden fee's. If you sell your old truck you won't get a dime more than the $27K they offered in trade and you'd pay tax on the full $30,000 here, or about $2250+ $20 tag fee.

After it is all said and done it'll cost you somewhere between $3000-$5000 out of pocket to make the deal. Then you'll have a truck with $3000-$5000 less value. That's $6000-$10,000 out of your pocket just so you can stir a stick while driving. If you had bought a manual in the 1st place it would be OK, but financially it doesn't make sense to trade down and lose that much money.

And in 2020 a manual has ZERO advantages over an automatic. If you use the truck for towing or hauling the automatic is a much better choice. If you're using the truck as a toy some guys just enjoy changing their own gears. But from a practical perspective you can still manually select the proper gear you need to be in with an automatic just as easily if there is a need.
