Your right dealers dont like to pay you to take a car off their hands. But a straight trade is a option. His truck could sell for 2k more than what they are selling the manual for. The dealer would 100% trade something they are selling for 31k for something they could sell for 33k all day long.

You also have to keep in mind pay off values. If the OP has a loan out on his truck, it needs to be paid off and a new loan created to pay for it. So now the dealer gets to pay off his loan, then finance him for a new loan. Then they get to finance another person for even more when they sell his old car. They are going to be making their money on a finance loan.

So lets say I have 20k in loan on my truck, I want to trade it for a new one. Straight trade, no costs. I still have to have that 20k loan paid off as its tied to title of the first truck, The dealer can do that, they have the cash on hand to pay it off. Now my loan is paid off, but I am in debt to the dealer for the 20k. We trade trucks, and the dealer finances me for the 20k that I owe to them. Its the same money as before that I owed, but now its put into a new loan where the interest goes to the dealers loan group.
Then the dealer sells my old truck and they finance a new person for 33k and proceed to get more money in interest payments.

Selling your own vehicle depending on where you live isn't easy but doing a dealer trade is going to cost the OP money as no dealer is going to do a straight up swap for another vehicle or pay him money. Now if he wants to upgrade to a TRD Pro Manual and spend a bunch of money, they will probably be more than happy to help him......

In order to drive a manual trans truck you have to be smarter than the transmission.

why wouldn't a dealer do a swap or close to it? it's still a transaction. they still get their doc fee, they get the loan on the replacement vehicle, they get to get the other truck off of their floorplan and avoid paying fee's.

because they want to make money and a lot of people are dumb enough to “trade it in” at a loss instead of selling it themselves for 10-15% more money

obviously they want to make money, but if they move a unit and take in a good trade then it's worth it for the dealership....

Using my area and KBB with default options and excellent condition for the estimates here... KBB gives a range of $28k - $31k as an estimate for OP's vehicle value in private party. That's a 4 - 13% more money over the trade which, sure, is more money... for more hassle.

Plus as has been mentioned, if you trade in your vehicle, in most states, that reduces the tax burden. This can be anywhere from none to upwards of 7%. Using 3.5% for fun, that's a savings of $900 if OP trades in.

So if OP can take advantage of one of these tax conditions using the imaginary numbers I invented (so it's all really meaningless), OP can put forth a lot more effort and hope to break even by selling privately, or they can take the easy route (time is money, for buyers and sellers alike) and spend $4k out of pocket.

But, as I said, it's all really meaningless because...

I believe you are making the correct decision James. If you can wait it out, payoff your current pickup truck loan, then special order the Tacoma of your dreams in whatever transmission, color, and trim package you want. (My special order process took less than 90 days) And stay away from the dealerships in Central Texas, as you know they feed on every Joe PCSing to Ft Hood. I special ordered my pickup from the internet and Mountain States Toyota in Denver came in $3000 under every other dealership I priced in Texas and yes, it was an apple to apples comparison. I spent $79 for a one-way airplane ticket to Denver and drove it back to Dallas. Keep us updated. "FIRST TEAM"! (2-12 CAV 2002-2004)

I never drove an auto 3rd gen but after driving and then getting a manual 3rd gen, I never once second guessed myself. Remember though, having a car that only you can drive (i.e. manual), is a blessing in some ways cause only you can drive it, but makes like harder in other ways that I didn't consider before driving manual. Twisted your left ankle badly? Your truck is now for display only haha at least until you can articulate your ankle

Not to speak for everyone, but my ‘20 auto drives just fine. I haven’t experienced any “gear hunting” or anything that feels out of the ordinary myself. The truck is a bit sluggish, but I think that’s all on the gearing and engine. I’d take what I read on internet forums with a grain of salt. These forums are typically filled with more enthusiasts versus average consumers. We all know most enthusiasts are going to take the manual. Outside of that world, the vast majority of these trucks are offered in auto. There is nothing wrong with these transmissions. Not liking where they shift at doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with them. They simply just don’t like them. I can guarantee you that many of these trucks with an automatic transmission are going to see 300,000+ miles with no issues.

I can’t much comment on the price difference, but I can tell you that I traded in a 2016 SR5 AT for a 2020 OR 6MT and it made driving fun again. I don’t what it is about the manuals, but they make me smile. It was the best decision I’ve made in a while.
