I did the tranny service and I followed the links I found on this site. My issue is the tranny will not change from third. I put it back in temp test mod and it shows over hot. I check the overfill while on and it drains fluid. What am I doing wtong? Does the temp light have to stay steadily on in order to check correct level? Any help is greatly appreciated

Well, If it shows over hot then it’s to hot to check. Ya gotta let it cool down and re check.

Yes, You should just check it first thing in the morning. It takes a long time to cool if the ambient temp is above 50 or so. When its solid, check it with the engine running. When flashing, to hot.

You aren't in limp mode are you? You will have check engine lights if you are.

How do I check that? Scan tool?
Will it go into limp mode if fluid level is incorrect

Sometimes transmission codes require going into the ecu using a scanner , scan guage or ultra guage and then clear the codes . Codes will not be illuminated on the dash unless you are polluting the air .
There is a good chance you have some transmission codes that were created while doing the transmission service. This is fairly common
Clear the codes and you should get overdrive as well as lock up again . You could also try popping the battery cables off for a while but this depends on soft or hard codes . As mentioned above , you are most likely in limp mode .
Is your transmission the 5 speed automatic or the 4 speed auto ?

Some guys have been known to squash or cut the wires going to the solenoids when they tighten the filter back up or they accidently knock the wiring going through the transmission casing out of place . The wiring gets incredibly brittle after years of hot / cold / hot cold .
Got my fingers crossed that you dont have to take the pan back off :fingerscrossed:

Our transmission pan takes 3 quarts to fill. I do a drain and fill at this point and don't even bother checking level after filling it now, and I definitely don't bother putting the truck into "transmission fluid level check mode."

Honestly the difference between "hot to the indicated manual temperature" in comparison to just hot to operating temperature is negligible as far as fluid level goes.

If you are indeed in limp mode it would be best to reset any associated codes and if you have the capability to, even potentially perform a transmission relearn.

Otherwise, if you did remove the transmission pan (for whatever reason) just to do a service and you did pinch the wiring as suggested above then you will have to remove the pan once again and fix the wiring. Hope it pans out for you (no pun intended, okay maybe sort of)!

Glad that's all it was . Could have been worse ..... I have seen it many times . Helped a lot of members in the past with the same problem .
I am assuming everything was fairly clean in the pan ?

Just get a OBD Bluetooth reader and download torque app or fusion app. Get the pdis to read temp instead of messing with jumping a wire in the OBD port. The 2.5 Gens temps are 97-115. Drain the pan in the morning. Measure what comes out. Add a .5-1.0 more to that total. Run the engine till you get your readings. Take the check plug off. If fluid trickles out your done. If not let cool and add more fluid. Redo temp check.
