Manual driver's are a dying breed :notsure:

That and the 6 speed manuals in the 2nd gens aren't exactly known for their quality...

Or, ya know, the mods got bored one day. haha

I just test drove the 2015 auto V6, there was no 'bite' on the downshift of any substance, now it had 5 km on it so I wasn't gonna push it but the manual has that 'bite' and response, right?

I can't find the data but iirc I saw that only 5% of V6 are sold with the manual. Haven't seen the % with the I4.

    I love my 5-lug stick.

An opinion poll can't conclude which is "stronger", always was a retarded question.

That's the clutches/torque converter slipping to provide a smooth downshift.

And if you know how to drive a stick there is no "bite" as you call it, you perfectly rev match the engine before letting the clutch out...

Wheather one transmission is stronger then another is irrelevant, if i cannot put it in the gear i need for any given driving condition.

The auto is better , shift when you want , don't shift when you don't want or need to

Have driven both autos and manuals for 36 years and my '11 Taco will be my last manual vehicle. Was a time when autos were weak and less efficient. Now, the modern auto transmissions are top notch in every way. There just isn't a reason to drive a stick other than most thieves can't figure out how to take your vehicle. I live in a good area so that's not a worry.

There are two problems with auto transmissions; they shift when I don't want them to, and they don't shift when I want them to. The manual trans has neither of those problems.

who says you have to use 1st. I had a 1981 F150 and for normal driving I never used it. Truck would start in 1st without depressing clutch. It was kind of useless

The manual transmission is an excellent theft deterrent device. :D

Drive what you want. I personally get bored driving an automatic but to each's own.

That bugs me with autos. Fortunately I was able to figure out the computer control on my Jeep and made a bypass with switches to choose gear and torque converter lock-up. Altho it's shifting doesn't bug me as much as most trannys, I often drive it as a manual. Engine braking with the TCC locked gives it all the braking of a stick. Unfortunately the hydraulic circuit won't allow TCC lock in first, but everything else can be selected. Some transmissions don't like to be shifted manually even with the stock lever and can lead to accelerated wear and some will override all safety and allow a downshift at speeds high enough to over-rev the engine so one needs to know what their trans will do before deciding to use it manually.

Those are generally not referred to as 4 speeds, they're 3+1 for good reason. L is only for when you need it; starting up a boat ramp it's a great thing to have. The gear spread 1-3 is somewhat crappy tho.

Stronger is a relative word. Stronger in what way? Is the auto usually faster in the quarter for the average driver, yes because most average drivers do not know how to shift a standard or the stock standard is not able to be shifted as required for racing. Is an auto easier on and off-road, yes. However the auto is in no way stronger in the sense of strength or lasting. The auto will crap out long before a standard if put in the exact same stressed situations.

Take any two Tacoma's or any other passenger truck, one automatic, one standard, and put a 20,000 pound load behind them and run them day and night with those loads for 100,000 miles in mountainous areas non stop except for gas and normal scheduled maintenance and watch the auto crap out and the standard keep right on trucking. Go to any transmission repair shop and you will find the repair needed for autos is 50 to 100 times greater than needed for standards and even when a standard needs repaired it is almost always cheaper. So the standard is stronger as well as cheaper, but it is not as easy for most drivers today. ;)

Anybody can drive a manual , it's not some super secret handshake club

Auto is stronger , and for the herpaderps , you do realize you can manually shift your auto tranny if you want a downshift or to not allow an upshift right ?

My auto will down shift when I want it to:stirthepot: It just won't up shift when I tell it to, but I don't usually have an urgent need for it to up shift like I do for down shifting:notsure:

On my 2nd gen, the auto won't downshift if it will over rev the engine. I've been doing hill climbs in 2nd gear and losing speed and I'll bump the shifter into 1st and it won't shift down until the RPM will be below 5K in 1st gear. 3rd to 2nd does the same, I haven't had the opportunity to test the higher gears. haha

But you can't prevent it from down shifting at full throttle no matter what you do. If you want full throttle in high gear at freeway speed there's no way to do it. Why put up with a crappy auto trans if you don't have to?
