It doesn't downshift if you are at a high enough speed , maybe you are thinking about the torque converter locking and unlocking

I definitely understand the difference between the torque converter unlocking and a down shift, and that's not what I am referring to. I am referring to the transmission down shifting when I accelerate at full throttle when I simply want to accelerate at full throttle in high gear, or getting two or three down shifts when what I want is one down shift. As stated above, there are two problems with automatic transmissions, they shift when I don't want them to, and they don't shift when I want them to.

I would make another observation on the topic. You never see an automatic transmission running in NASCAR today. The reason is they are not strong enough. The standard is the strongest. As I mentioned go to any transmission shop and compare the number of Autos being repaired to the number of standards. You do not have to be phi beta kappa to figure out that the auto is at least 100 times weaker of the two while the auto is more convenient of the two. ;)

How quick one is in the 1/4 mile over the other doesn't define strength, nor does cost to rebuild one over the other. Strength is not relative but defined. The only way to know which is stronger is to apply a measured input torque and see how much it takes to break one over the other. Longevity is a whole other thing and in most cases it'll come down to how it's used. I've drag raced both and never had an auto fail but bent a shaft on a manual from a hard launch. There are also much fewer axles and driveshafts broken with autos except for ones using a trans brake.

20k behind a Taco would be ludicrous, but if the auto isn't over heated it'll probably do fine. With a manual you'll go through so many clutches getting that load moving it'll cost more than rebuilding the auto. I've seen many times where an auto version of a vehicle has a higher tow rating than a manual and never the other way around. This probably has nothing to do with the auto being stronger and most likely because of the clutch.

There may be 50+ autos repaired for every manual, but there's also probably 50 autos for every manual on the road. When doing that comparison one should also add in all the clutches being replaced on manuals then the numbers become a little closer between the two. A clutch job on some vehicles can cost almost as much as rebuilding an auto.

Most supercars and many semi-tractors are only offered with auto shifting manuals so that makes them the strongest if we follow some of the logic being used in this thread.

I believe Nascar rules mandate a manual transmission with 4 foreword gears and one reverse. I've heard speculation as to the reason it's mandated, if you have evidence to show that they mandate it because of strength please post it.

F1 uses a semi automatic gearbox and they see far harder use than NASCAR . Whereas a NASCAR car will run up through the gears once and stay in top gear for 100-200 laps , an F1 car upshifts and downshift 50-60 times per lap

    So , yeah

An auto shifting manual is still a manual. ;) The point about the 20k is that there is not a lot is starting and stopping, just pulling up and down mountains. The auto will crap out and the manual will still be going. I will stick with the numbers. The manual is stronger.

Those are not autos. Those are manuals with an auto shift. ;) No production automatic can stand up against a production manual and survive the same abuse for the same period of time.

The tranny ECU pre-selects the next gear based on engine rpm and other factors

    Wat.

    *insert Billy Madison trivia scene*

    Look up top fuel dragsters.

Also OZ, you have to admit F1 was way more exciting to watch back in the days when they had to know how to heel toe downshift those 1000+hp beasts. :D

1000bhp cars coming back for 2017

also this year's 1.6L V6 Turbo Hybrids are going to break all-time lap records set during the V10 era

That's cool and all but there's just something about how raw the late 80's cars were that appeals to me (even though they were around before I was born).

    Nice.

Did the auto in the pace car blow up for no apparent reason like some in this thread have been led to believe?

The internal workings are still manual. Manuals are stronger. I said a person does not have to be phi beta kappa to know that but I was evidently wrong.
