I like driving my 6 speed, even in the hell that is Baltimore/DC traffic...

As far as strength, the auto is obviously overdesigned if it was intended for a V8, so we know it is strong...the manual is also used in the Camaro V6 which is putting out as much horsepower and torque as the V8 the auto was mated to, so I am going to call this a tie...

A lot of people like to point out that the auto has 100 times more clutches than the manual, what they fail to mention is that these clutches are being lubricated. It is like complaining about the metal to metal contact of the piston to the cylinder wall. Sure WITHOUT oil it would burn up in minutes, but with out it will pull off 250k+ miles.

I've driven both over the years, on road and off. In a sports car I would prefer a manual, for slower offroading the auto makes life so much easier and helps keep you out of hairy situations.

Something tells me it isn't the exact same transmission. I have seen 302 motors putting out 300 horses and others putting out 900. Still a 302 but that's about all they have in common.

for 2nd gen, this shouldn't be this close. The 6 speed is a total joke, I would hope the general TW opinion would agree with me. Toyota replaced the tranny in my xrunner twice before I traded it in at 115k.

Actually, now that I am reading the thread title, it does not match the poll itself. Strong vs reliability...either way, I bought an auto in my new taco bc I have small tears in the meniscus in each knee, stop and go traffic with a manual wasn't an option anymore.

Something about driving a manual makes it feel more like a truck to me. It makes you feel more connected and in my opinion makes it a better experience.

My '99 has had no issues with it except a new clutch at 175K. And in stock configuration; auto's and manual's will each have its pro's and con's depending on what you use your truck for. That said, virtually every con in any configuration can be upgraded/removed with a mod or two.

Pick the one you like to drive and enjoy the Taco.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
All depends on driving habits, but autos have more moving parts inside them so are more prone to breakage.

I hear what you are saying but I don't think a supplier of transmissions is as likely to tweak the transmission as Ford would be in house with their 302...My guess is the most likely difference between the two are the gear ratios and everything attached to the transmission (clutch, etc.). I would assume the Camaro transmission receives better synchros because the Taco ones are almost too slow for a truck, I can't imagine them in a sports car...

Until you burn up some of those clutches and wipe all the media off or warp one if the discs.

If you are talking strength, then the 6-speed in stronger......

It has a beefy 22 spline output shaft compared to the smaller 23 spline auto shaft

    6 speed on the right.
