I drive my husbands Tacoma every day. Two weeks ago I was terrified by this man who I accidently made very angry. When I stopped at the next light and he got out of his car and came running back right up to my window and was screaming at me. My windows were up but later I realized my doors were unlocked the whole time. He scared me badly enough that I didn't think to lock the doors. The car we sold to buy the truck used to automatically lock the doors when I started driving. I understand that someone could break a glass window if they wanted to but I would still have felt safer if the doors would have been locked.

I did a search on TW but could only find one thread that talked about whether the locks could be changed to lock by themselves. The people on the thread didn't seem to agree if it could even be done. I called the dealer and one place said they could do it or I could get instructions from the internet on how to do it. I found these instructions but it's not working and I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong. When I called the dealer back they said the truck must not be able to do this.

Has anyone else seen these instructions and tried them? Could someone else try and see if it works on their truck? Please!

This Will Program All The Doors To Lock Whenever The Vehicle Reaches A Speed Of About 12 mph.
    1. Set the Parking Brake
    2. Make sure all doors are closed
    3. Place the ignition switch in the “ON” position
    4. Automatic Transmission Models Only- place the transmission gear selector in the “N” position (NEUTRAL)
    5. Within 10 seconds of turning the ignition to the “ON” position, press and hold the driver’s side power door lock switch in the unlock position (front of the switch) for 5 seconds and then release
    • All doors will lock and unlock to indicate that the programming was successful.
    • To cancel the programming, repeat the steps.

This will program all the doors to automatically unlock whenever the driver’s door is opened within 10 seconds after the ignition is turned from “ON” to the “ACCESSORY” or “OFF” position.
    1. Set the Parking Brake
    2. Make sure all doors are closed
    3. Place the ignition switch in the “ON” position
    4. Automatic Transmission Models Only- place the transmission gear selector in the “N” position (NEUTRAL)

Tacomas do not have that feature. Some alarms have it if you get one.

Just curious as it a stupid feature not to have on a vehicle.

Tried it just now, it doesn't work for me. Notice how directions say push unlock (front of switch) mine is left/right.

That's why I was thinking I might not be doing it right. My buttons are side by side too. Thank you very much for trying!

Skip the door locks and get the flamethrower mod for future road ragers.

This guy was really scary. All I think I did was drive the speed limit and he went tearing around me and passed across a double line. I think he already had something on fire!

My old 2005 Camry had auto locking doors. My 2015 Tacoma doesn't. Kind of surprised me. Same thing with auto headlamps. I would have thought a newer vehicle would have more features - not less.

My opinion? Get a hand gun (check local gun laws, train to use it, etc). If the guy decides to hurt you a door lock only helps until he breaks the window out.

Always stop with a gap between you and the vehicle in front of you. Enough that you can turn the wheel and drive away if needed. And be conscious of an escape route where ever you go. Never know when nut jobs will happen in our lives.

What if you added an aftermarket remote start with alarm? Rock you think it will work?

Aftermarket should work, depending on the aftermarket vendor. When I had a Compustar alarm installed in my Tacoma, auto locking doors were part of the package.

So should I try what is shown? Or should I find the book that came with alarm and see if it is an option in the book?

Don't know what's going on there but here in Texas someone would have got out and put him in his place.

When the man was on the side of my truck yelling I just held onto the steering wheel, stared out the front window, and cried. I'm not sure I could have done anything to have scared him away. This experience was enough though to really make me think. I haven't been able to come up with what I should have done differently. I think you are right.

When I pulled up to traffic to stop at the light I was just listening to my music and wasn't paying enough attention. I didn't notice the car that went zooming by me earlier was stopped at the light until I saw him open his door and get out of his car. I need to be more aware of what happens around me and think about "escape routes". Thank you :)!

Scary situation. I gave this a go on my 11 Taco and it did not work. It has front to back lock, but the lock is forward. Looks like you may have to invest in an alarm system, or make it a habit of locking them when you start moving.

This is interesting. I don't have a 2nd gen Tacoma, but I do have a 2nd gen Tundra.

The Tundra can be programmed with the Techstream software, the same software dealers use. I actually own my own TS program. With that I can program my door locks to several different options. Example, lock doors when key is turned on, when truck is put into drive or when truck reached a certain mph.

It surprised me that 2nd gen Tacoma don't have the feature that you want. I know for a fact the first gen Tacoma can be programmed to lockwhen key is turned in ignition. I did my 1998.

I would stop by the dealer and tell them your story. I bet can be done. I have a hard time believing that it can't, but am willing to be proven wrong.
