Automatic 5 speed

Sorry if this question has been on before but can't find a thread.
Our 06 won't shift into 2nd or 1st. Shift lever moves to those positions bvut the transmission won't down shift below 3rd.
It is a V-6, Acess cab.

I think the rev limiter or something like that will keep it from down shifting. If rpms would be too high for any lower gear the ecu wont let it shift. I think

 

I agree with Yota243 and that isn't something new, my Chevy trucks were the same way. To prove this, drive at normal speed. put it in first and slow down like you were going to stop. The lower gears will kick in as the speed gets low enough not to explode the transmission.

You should also be able to come to a complete stop and put it in first, when you pull out it will stay in first and not upshift.

 

Also you could have wheel speed sensor issue. Do you any other light on your dash on? Abs light?

 

The transmission is computer controlled . Your best bet is scanning the ECM . Shift solenoids comes to mind .

 

Thanks Guys, I can't get it to shift into 2nd or 1st even sitting still. Seems hard to move the lever the farther I come down the shift pattern.

 

Are you saying the gear shift selector is difficult to move ?

Yes, it seems to tighten up as I come back down through the selections. I looked under there this morning and see nothing that would jam it, again this morning it went into 1st and 2nd

 

The second link I posted sounds like it may be your problem and is somewhat common in the Tacoma . Check and clean electrical connections at nuetral start switch and make sure the switch itself works properly . There is a write up in the second link explaining how to check it and here is how Toyota wants it adjusted
