seems like several 09 owners have this issue. Is it a defect? A characteristic of the truck? WTF?

I traded my cheap a$$ Colorado for this and all I have is a truck that needs a TSB update and a suspect transmission? Toyota = quality?

Your Tacoma will be doing the exact same thing,in the exact same fashion long, long after the Colorado has moved on to the boneyard.....Don't sweat it.

I've also noticed it in my 09 with 1050 miles on it. It kind of whines around the turns and then shifts. I figured that was just the way it is. If anybody gets it "retuned" or "programmed" please let us know.

'07 here. I have no issues whatsoever with my auto. Honestly, its the best auto I have ever driven. ALways smooth, and seems to always be in the ruight gear.

^Best for me, possibly. I really liked the 5 spd auto in my Altima BUT that would get the nod for me because of the autostick/manumatic (whatever you want to call it). That's the one thing I wish my Tacoma had that it doesn't. But yeah, it still is a very good auto, IMO.

You can manually pick the gears in the Tacoma. :)

Mine does the same thing - 2009 4x4 ACC Cab w/850 miles on it. It almost feels like the trannie is slipping when I turn corners. When I was in college I had a 79 Monte Carlo with a trannie that I had to replace twice. I hope it isn't that all over again, but then again if it is it would be on Toyota this time.

Another 2009 with the same issue. Not a big deal to me now. I'm going to keep my eye on it. My 2006 Tacoma did not do this. Maybe I'll call the dealer to see what they say.

I'm a hundred miles or so away from getting my first oil change - I will bring it up with the dealer then. This is one of several threads on this topic, and I've yet to see a post that says "I have an 09' and mine doesn't do that". This leads me to believe it's a characteristic of that transmission - a bothersome characteristic I might add - whether it's a symptom of a flaw that will turn into a real long term problem remains to be seen...

I was concerned when I first bought my truck about the lag but some people in the thread said the "computer is programming your style of driving". At first I thought it was BS but decided to hold out and see what happens before addressing the issue to the dealership. I have approximately 3300 miles on my truck and I've noticed this pass weekend that the lag has decreased dramatically. Perhaps what people are saying about the computer programming itself is true. I hardly punch the gas because of the lag in shifting but that's also not my style of driving. Well okay, every now and then a little gas just to hear the TRD exhaust growl. :) Anyone else noticed a decrease in lag?

I have close to 7000 miles now and it still does it so i don't think the truck is programming itself to my driving style.

Maybe it's just me, but when I first got the truck I was tender with it. Easy on the pedal and the truck acted like my 91 corolla. Then I started to get more aggressive with it, and I noticed it took a while to get used to me hammering on the pedal. But eventually it responded super quick. I had a stint where I was having to super watch my fuel consumption, so I was going real easy off the mark and keeping my speed down, and now that I'm okay for giving the pedal a little more lead, I noticed that it's not as responsive. But again, it's getting there.

The only thing I've noticed is that a few times when accelerating fast up to 80-85km/h and taking my foot off the gas, the engine has stayed locked at 2500 RPM for a few seconds before kicking back down. And this was before my infamous 'oil change'.

Mine does this a little if you baby it, but it's not really slipping. It's coasting because the engine RPMs are below what's necessary to accelerate the torque converter. If you ever think the trans is slipping, just punch the gas down to the floor and it should take off like a raped ape. If it doesn't you've got problems, otherwise not IMHO.
