Made this yesterday and figured I would post it here. Havea German Shepherd who's 50 pounds and will grow to 100 and I know I can't be the only one who thinks the backseat is a little too small for us dog owners. Overall cost was around $60 but could be cheaper if you do smarter shopping, I had a ton of supplies left over

I will end up wrapping carpet on the 2X4's that hold up the back part touching the seat and also adding an additional 2X4 piece behind it in order to support it more and prevent it from slanting once my dogs on it

The wooden legs in front are attached with hinges that fold outwards from the platform so I can take it out easy and lay it in the bed whenever I need the rear seats back

I'm thinking of also creating a back part to it that's also attached with hinges to protect the rear seat leather

Your pooch doesn't fit with the back seats folded down? Or maybe just the bottom seat portion folded over and a wooden platform on the bottom floor. My cousin has a German shepherd and that thing is HUUUGE! I would imagine the seat being a bit tall?

My 65# yellow Lab can't ride in the back seat -- too much shedding, too much panting, too much slobber, too much overall craziness. She would be into the front seat, mine or the passenger's, in a heartbeat. So, she rides in a dog crate in the bed of the truck. She's calmer, I'm calmer, and we get along much better that way.

Oh, there have been exceptions. A couple of years ago, when I was leaving North Dakota after a 10 day pheasant hunt, it was -19F and the dog was exhausted, so I let her ride in the back seat then. Until the outside temperature got up to a balmy 15F. Then I put her in the crate in the bed of the truck. BTW, the crate has an insulated cover and I had a canopy on the truck for winter-time travel.

For dogs that aren't comfortable with car travel, a crate is the only way to go IMO.

He does but not only is it a pain to have to keep taking the head rests out and putting the seats down but it's not very comfortable for him and I have two subs back there that he'll chew up if he has the chance lol. I just wanted to make him something that gives him maximum space while being level and as comfortable as possible for him

Haha that's funny, it reminds me of my pooch. 70lb pitbull. Super sweet but totally nuts! I'm thinking of getting a camper shell so she can roam around in the bed without the craziness and slober everywhere.. drives me insane lol. I just don't have space so I'm thinking of a soft topper.

Definitely would chew up the subs lol.
my pooch would also jump into the passenger seat if she had the chance lol.

I'm gonna make the same platform for him though. I have one of those dog mats the makes a u shaped sling

I have a German shepherd too and I use one of those slings/hammock style covers. He loves it and I can take it out, throw it in the washing machine to get the mud and dog hair out quickly. Also, that water bottle holder on the back of the center console makes a great water bowl for him!

I use a cheapo rear seat hammock from Amazon with the seats folded down. The rear head rest straps are snapped through the seat-back retention loops to hold up the rear flap and keep sand out of the cubbies. I cut down a piece of 2" thick high density foam to 24"x53" to put under the hammock for longer trips. My 105 lb GSD seems to like it, though I do have to help him get in if he's feeling lazy.

Yea, bigger dogs present bigger problems. I won't even let my Pembroke jump in or out.

I'd rather not think of all the $ spent :(
I like that platform. I didn't think of that. I popped the rear seat bottoms out and laid down the backs without the headrest (So I can fit in the front with the seat all the way back)

I was looking for some foam for my pup on some longer road trips. I stopped by a mattress store to see about one of those mattress toppers. They had one and then the manager suggested a "warrantied memory foam mattress" I laughed until he told me it was brand new and could let me have it for $25. So I went home, cut it up, put her favorite blanket on it. There is three sections inside so we can adjust the height. Down side is my dog has a better bed than I. Now her and the GF fight over it on long trips. So you may want to check your local stores for such a steal.
