I have an '18 Sport MT. As soon as you shift out of reverse the camera shuts off. Is there any setting that I can't find that would delay the shutoff of the backup camera by a few seconds? Typically, I'm still rolling slowly as I go to neutral from reverse.

    Standard transmission I hope?

I think it would be much better to just simply come to a complete stop first.

No mod or setting that I know of. Funny my wife’s car does exactly what you want, and I hate it...:)
You could easily put a capacitor, resistor and diode in-line from the reverse signal wire running to the headunit that would achieve exactly what you want. But I wouldn’t recommend that if you use any form of backup camera override. I can’t be bothered to work out the capacitor & resistor size but about 1000uf cap and 200ohm resistor should work. Capacitor holds the charge, resistor lets charge out slowly (not blow the HU), diode to stop back feeding reverse lights. That’s the basic idea. Make the HU think you are in reverse for longer than you actually are.

My ford has a 5 sec delay and i wish i could do a 3 to 5 also, i think most people are rolling a little bit when they shift. I do have the back up cam over ride but I'm not hitting it for every little thing, some sort of timer IC chip i think. let me know if you find anything.

I would say the anytime backup camera switch might be the fix to that.

But then again I'm kinda old school when it comes to reversing, personally I prefer to rely on mirrors as my primary and the camera as my secondary check. So when I'm switching reverse to drive, I'm glancing between mirrors and windshield at that point.

My Kenwood HU lets me select front/rear camera, say on startup before I move, then it sticks to that camera irregardless of the shift position set after that. So you if start your Tacoma, switch to the camera display (I use a long-press one of my steering column buttons thanks to the MaestroRR unit) then the front camera comes up instantly. I then touch the top center of the HU screen and it switches to the backup camera. That camera will show until I exit the camera screen by doing something like pushing the home button or another HU button option. The front camera works the same. Shifting to D or R will not take control of the camera during this process at all. Great enhancement if a replacement HU was on your list.

Bummer, I was hoping for a setting tucked deep in the menu someplace... My wife's Ram Promaster City has that delay setting; it's a nice feature to have.

If I read this correctly, this will not only turn the camera on but also the backup lights. That's no good.

It is still just a switch, much like the one you would have for an override cable. So, it would achieve your goals without any unintended issues.

I'm in the same boat as you that a delay would be nice. But then, I haven't wired in the rear camera switch for quite a while now. Pretty silly.

Custom sliders (1.75" HREW tube w/ 3/16" base plates). Custom front bumper and high clearance rear bumper (1/4" steel plate, 1.75" tube.) Apex 5500 winch w/synthetic line (36lbs) and required accessories for an underpowered winch (snatch blocks and extra line.) Tekonsha P3 brake controller, remote start, any-time-backup camera w/ front facing camera, Leer 100R shell (w/e-track single slot tie-down mounts for removable Yakima EasyTop.) Another vote for either override harness or anytime camera. The front facing camera w/anytime backup cam is my most frequently used mod.

I'm probably going to go this route. Not quite the solution I was looking for but at least I can turn it on while driving without giving the driver of the car behind me a heart attack.
