Short story, the flood from hurricane Harvey ate my Tundra. So, after State Farm bought it, I bought a 2014 Tacoma. I've read all the documentation in the manual about the backup camera but it doesn't work on the radio screen. So when I looked at the camera itself in the tailgate latch, it looks like it is folded up/closed. It looks like a toggle (see pic). No lens to be seen. I don't want to force it by prying since it is all plastic so is there something I'm missing?

You don't have a camera, you have the plug that goes over the camera when it is removed.

My '12 doesn't have a backup camera either-- I think it came with a package in the SR5 and up.

You have no camera. Open the tailgate and make sure it's prewired before proceeding.

Not sure where it would display. My '13 still uses the mirror. If that's where it's supposed to display for you, you need to confirm that its prewired by pulling the overhead cubby and finding the wires.

I have a base 5 lug. Adding the camera, mirror and wiring trim to the mirror was easy peasy PnP.

Camera from eBay, mirror from forum Sale section, trim from dealer.

I'll check but I'm pretty sure it's wired. When I lower the tail gate I see wiring going in that direction and there is a sticker on the bed liner warning to uncouple the camera wiring before removing the tail gate. It sure is an awesome truck though. So much easier to park than the big-@ss Tundra I had before.

All you need to do is buy the camera unit itself, remove that little piece of plastic, and install it. You are probably all wired so it should really just be plug and play.

Oem camera is less than $100

Thanks, I'll give it a shot. Recieved the camera the other day.

My base Tacoma had no camera. Installed OEM 86790-04021 as shown at bottom of this screen. Took 5 minutes. Plug matched. Checked under rear bumper. All plugged and sealed. Doesn't work when in reverse. What did I miss?

Not all 2014s have the right wiring. Mine didn't, but itbis a base reg cab so I never have anything in it. You need to pry back the wiring loom and look to see how many wires are running to the tailgate.

    Did the camera work?

No, the camera didn't work. Looked like six wires at the tailgate plug. Also, there is a plug connection coming from the tailgate behind the bumper on the passenger side that is connected and wrapped. It joins the main bundle (tail lights etc.) going forward.

my '13 has it, originally it displayed in the rear view mirror but I bought a conversion harness and now it displays in the head unit, which IMO is much better even with losing the backup lines.

That plug at the tailgate, going into the main loom, probably only has the one wire then going forward to the cab then. That's the wiring that you would look to see if there are six wires going forward. If I remember correctly all trucks have six wires going from the bumper to the tailgate latch, but only a lucky few had the six wires going from the bumper to the cab.

Thanks. Now I know where to look. Need to get hold of a Tacoma wiring diagram. I actually don't need a backup cam. It's just an interesting project to keep my brain in shape. I'm kinda old.

You're right. Only one wire(Blue). Seems odd. willing to bet that the others are cut off and stuffed into the bundle going further up. Will take some delicate surgery to find out. Will let you all know if I find them.

I bet. I thought it wa genius to our it in the rear view mirror since you should be looking three anyway. It is mice to have it in the radio too. Radio gets washed out easier than the mirror. Sun hits it like crazy. Easy mod to hit both of you add it down the line.
