This noise is not Stops or Flaps. I've had it for a while and it started after a fairly gentle 4X4 ride of about an hour duration. At the same time it started I seemed to notice a "solenoid" type sound engaging or disengaging after putting it in gear. Could be unrelated.

The sound to me is the same as if you had it in 4 wheel drive on dry pavement. I think something is not disengaging and the front shafts are turning.

I know it's a reach but I once had a Camaro that made a similar sound in the front and it was actually the Posi in the rear end.

Speculation aside.... Has anyone actually been to the dealer yet? Mine is 45 minutes away and I hate going in without a good lead.

I hate to sound like a dirt bag, but this thread was started for a gen 2 Tacoma issue. Older Tacos are completely different so please don't cloud this issue with comparisons to the 90's....

Hoping I didn't piss you all off.... I was talking to a buddy of mine who said I should be able to get under my truck and spin the fron axles by hand. If I can't, he said that they are not disengaging and the sound I hear is the same as if it were in 4x4. Which is exactly the sound I hear.

I got under mine and I can't spin them. So, the question is if all of you Gen 2 owners can spin your front axles in 2 wheel drive on dry pavement???

I went to the Dealership over the front end clunk. Was able to reproduce it with a Tech in the car. After three hours of waiting they told me that they changed my LSD rear fluid and added an "additive". They said the cluck in my front end was caused by the rear end???? They told me to give it a thousand miles to work in before I say it didn't work. I'll report back 1K from now.

My truck has the same issue and I was able to reproduce the front end clunk with the front end of the truck on jacks. The noise seems to be coming from the rack and pinion.

The rack and pinion seems to be moving side to side in its mount bushings. I have ordered a set of new rack and pinion mount bushings.

When ever I take it apart I will send a update.

My 2011 dclb does it also only on right turns as far as I can tell. Didn't do it before I lifted it (3 in OME lift).

Anyone get a definitive cause and solution to this problem?

no update? I have the same knocking on turns and I am pretty sure it's my rack and pinion bushings. Do you have a link for the bushing numbers?

Mine is doing it too. I am changing out the intermediate steering column. I am told that the universal joint wears out and causes some issues.

When I turn going high speeds from one way to the other it feels like there is a miss or spot where the steering wheel keeps moving but the wheels don't. Just for a fraction of a second. Scared the heck out of me a couple times. When going slow in parking lots I can hear the clunk.

I ordered a new intermediate steering column and should be here tomorrow. I should know soon if it helps.

Well I installed My new intermediate steering column and it didn't fix anything. Waisted $222 buying the piece. Oh well. Hope I can sell the one I just took out because it's just fine.

What I did find is there is a power steering link holding the steering box that the intermediate shaft hooks into and that power steering link has a bolt to hold the steering rack and I had my 6 year old daughter turn my wheel from left to right and watched it jump. I tightened the bolt and it has stopped the clunking and tightened up the steering.

I hope to do a better road test tomorrow but the small road test showed me that it is now fixed.

I have attached the picture of the part outlined in red.

Why would you buy a part especially one that expensive if you where not 100% certain that was the problem? I was a mechanic in the Air Force ground support equipment one of the very first things we learned was trouble shooting it is a very sound process. Im not trying to be rude Im just saying you spent all that money and time for nothing.

You make a good point but I was forced too. I will explain.

I bought a vehicle that is not from my province (IN Canada) and I need to get an out of province inspection done to make sure vehicle is safe for the road. When I got the inspection they test drove the vehicle, inspected it and said the Intermediate Steering Column had too much movement and needed to be replaced. I now have to replace that part to pass the inspection. So I did.

I explained to the garage that it was highly unlikely to be the intermediate steering column but they told me I needed to do it. I replaced it and fixed the steering myself by tightening up the power steering link.

Sounds a little silly to me, but I am not going to argue with the garage I have to take my truck back to for the final inspection. It could have been much worse.

    Hope that makes sense.
