It seems so, but it never is. Dealers never lose money on trade-ins and it’s never a waste of their time. They will give you an honest boning whether you realize it or not. You might think it’s a wash price-wise, then they start with the transfer fees and depot clearance fees and market adjustments and warranty transfer fees.

You will be boned. That you can count on.

There are port injectors and direct injectors on the 3.5L. Wonder what 2 of his went bad. The direct injectors are the injectors that have the self cleaning feature. However they are the ones that are more expensive and also more time consuming to replace.

Did they give you an idea of the probable cause? Was it for sure fuel?

It would be an expense but you might want to pull the others and see what your up against. IF and that’s an IF it’s gas that is causing it, they all have been exposed to the same gas. Just a thought and spitballing here. With those parts being so expensive it may be worth pulling them from a low mile wrecked one.

When injectors go bad its hard to pinpoint a cause, but gas is usually the first thing you look at.

Everyone should understand that Costco buys gas as a commodity, but is the only top tier supplier to perform the final blending of the detergent additives at the fueling station when the trucks offload the fuel into the tanks.
Other stations add the mixture at the truck loading dock to the tanker truck at the refineries terminal. If someone Is judging the gas that leaves the terminal to Costco, it isn’t done being blended yet.

Which means you actually have much less control. Get one wacko manager at one Costco, who’s had a few bong hits and either your get double the additive (having a bad trip) or no additive (society can suck it). I’d much prefer gas blended at the refinery, depot, whatever.

Yes because truck Docks are models of integrity and diligent work ethic and the humans there are better then the humans at Costco?

    https://www.costco.com/kirkland-signature-gasoline.html

Basicly human performance factors, be it in gas blending, or driving against opposing traffic on a two lane road are a fact of life. The consequences of error vary on the activity.

Most likely. I’ve worked at both many times in my career and the quality control at a fuel depot compared to a retail outlet is not comparable. The Costco model is random at best.

That baffle-gab link from Costco you shared has some very clever hints in it. I’ll let you find the hidden ones, but the most obvious is “tested in THE lab” as opposed to “tested in OUR lab”. They really have no way of knowing what they are selling you.

I doubt Costco has their own brand of fuel. Odds are they get it from a local supplier who follows their specifications. A lot of stations do this as well. Usually gas becomes bad due to some type of contamination once inside the tank. Anything with ethanol just sucks in as much water and moisture as it can. No station is fully immune to variables that can cause bad gas.

Here is another issue I have with your line of thought.

You highlight Costco and not the local retailer in the OPs fueling routine as a causal, factor without factual evidence . This is the kind of human factor we should be worried about. Biases can impact judgement and accuracy, even when evidence does not support the preferred conclusion.

another issue to consider is station volume, if one batch is bad enough to ruin injectors, more local cases would be emerging. If that does not emerge the cause could be with the injectors and not the fuel bad runs run in manufacturing as well as fuel and oil blending.
