After finding and reading that article, that comes straight from the horses mouth, I agree with you.

    It reads like double speak.

"Trust us we know whats best for you."

    https://www.toptiergas.com/toptier_detergent_gasoline/

Furthermore, going to read up on what top tier is you get this:

"Unwashed gums are an indication of the detergency level in gasoline. In the United States regulation was passed in the late 1990s requiring a minimum level of detergency in gasoline. Following the introduction of this regulation, vehicle manufacturers experienced a significant increase in reported vehicle performance issues, leading to the introduction of the TOP TIER™ Detergent Gasoline program. The standard, developed and supported by automakers is based on engine performance."

So being top tier just means that you put a certain amount of additives in your gasoline.

All I have is anecdotal info, but I've driver over 350k miles in the last 15 years, spread over 3 different vehicles, and a lot of the fuel was purchased at costco. I understand corporate obsession with profits, and don't give them a pass in this case. But I'd also like to note that corporate and store level profits are going to be damaged when 100s of people that bought gas at a specific costco are coming back and reporting injector problems.

Could this one costco have screwed up (accidentally, or on purpose), or have a bad tank? Sure.
Would that mean that every one of them is doing the same thing? Maybe, but the lack of complaints would seem to disagree.
I have no idea what testing is done to verify fuel advertised as Top Tier is tested and verified, but like most other quality testing, I'd bet on it being inadequate at best.

And I’m not doubting that the Costco attendant adds the required bucket of soap to their cheap-ass open-market additive-free bottom-budget fuel, most of the time. I’m sure they do.

I cant find anything about what additives anyone puts its all proprietary, but ive always heard that some gas station add water to their fuel, and I thought that it was an old wives tale, so I see now how its possible.

See, what you purporting as fact is really just your opinion. You believe Costco's micro managing of their quality control is the opposite. I'm reasonably certain they don't just eyeball it when mixing in the additives. Also, what's the difference between "dirt cheap stuff" and Top Tier at the refinery? Isn't it just the additives or are you implying that additives aside, there is a difference in the quality of the gas product that a refinery will produce.

The injectors themselves are easy to replace.. simply unbolt injector lines, remove valve cover... pry out old injectors (some require a special tool, but you can use a small pry tool, or a set of these...
    https://www.harborfreight.com/3-pc-...MIs72Ii8Si4QIVCFYNCh11GgJPEAQYGyABEgL6EvD_BwE

remove the cap cover from new injector and install..

NOTE: ONCE YOU REMOVE A DIRECT INJECTOR you must be certain to asess it quickly, and either re-install it, or be prepared to not ever install it again.. the phenolic seal ring near the tip will expand and you will NEVER get it back in the bore... do not force it... they should slide in with little force.. you should also clean out the injector bore to be sure NO soot/crust has formed to block the injector from fully installing.

BMW I know the injectors have to be coded (serial number on injectors, correlates to tested flow rates IOW: it'll run like shit, or ECU will not let engine start, throw codes, etc...).. not so sure about toyota D4S system....

If the same ones keep going out would it not be an issue in the engine other than gas used ?

Psst, the powertrain warranty is 60 months or 60,000 miles. So yes, two rusty injectors at 71,000 is a candidate for Goodwill.

If I were Toyota I'd want them back for analysis. If I paid $2k to have them replaced I'd frame them and put them on my wall. I certainly wouldn't let the dealer keep them.

The dealer will have to go to bat for him or he can open a case with Toyota Corporate. Either way, I'd would at least want to inspect the injectors first before committing to goodwill. If this is an isolated case, I would think his chances are slim.

Injectors are weird. So I'd say it would depend. 70k miles 2 injectors is weird. Most common problem would be gas before looking at engine failure. Haven't heard of complete engine failures on the third gens yet, except for that one guy climbing a 90 degree hill.

Aren’t our injectors supposed to be self cleaning?

Find a wrecked junkyard taco and get a whole set of injectors, find a local wrench to put 'em in if you don't know how

For anyone interested in the New England Area, I reached out to C--------- Farms Corporate office today to see if their gasoline is Rated a Top Tier, The answer I received was No. So if your looking to run only top tier gas to keep your injectors clean you may want to shop elsewhere. In case inquiring minds want to know !!

Thank you for this! I've been searching the net for a while trying to find this answer and couldn't. C. Farms is the only place that sells 93 Octane around me and that's what runs best on my Tune. Now I guess I need to run fuel injector cleaner once and a while.

I pump costco gas almost exclusively. Never had an issue really, both 87 and 93. I currently have 13k

I did however run 2 techron (concentrated formula) bottles at the same time on about 3/4 tank. The engine definitely idles smoother after I ran that tank. I have the feeleing that D4S and all, direct injection will always create more soot and deposits than only port injection. I drive with a semi leaded foot and occasionnaly hit rev limiter. Also lots of stop and go traffic. I rarely hear the seldf cleaning cycle like when the truck was newer. It was very noticeable when new. Sounded like a bucket of bolts at idle.

You may want to check your federal/state emissions warranty as well. It's been a while since I had to look at one but I believe the injectors would likely be covered as fuel metering is directly related to exhaust emissions. Not sure, but worth a look.
