Yea.. But if you think about it.. you have high air flow through the rad due to the speed.. No fuel going to the cylinders because your foot is off the throttle. High coolant flow due to the increased RPM.. Everything there points to cooling not heating..

I was just wondering what the thought process was.

As long as this tread has been revived, my 2¢...

Under normal driving conditions with auto transmission, I really don't feel it's necessary to downshift to engine break...in fact, I found the 2nd Tacoma auto to be surprising good at doing this on it's own (some may feel it's too good).

If, however, you're going down a prolonged steep decline, it certainly is a good idea to gear down and engine brake as required.

I will downshift to prevent standing on the brakes to hard. If you have ever driven a stick shift, you should be aware of the shift patterns and use the trans to break the engine imparting only the force needed to assist otherwise normal breaking. In other words, when you find you going to smash the breaks, use the trans to provide enging breaking suficient to allow normal breaking pressure, without exceeding the rev bandwith of any specific gear. Thats how I roll.

Something interesting I noticed about my Tacoma is the computer prevents the truck from over-revving on a downshift. It will wait until the truck is traveling slow enough(lower rpm) and then downshift. I noticed it first in 4wd low, shifting from 2 to L, but have since duplicated it in 2wd at higher speed.

Now im not sure if all automatic Tacoma's are programmed this way so I am in no way responsible for your actions/damage to your truck if you try this. Coming from owning only standard transmission vehicles up until now I find myself down shifting every time I drive the truck.

I down shift all the time. My tach routinely goes into 4000 RPM when downshifting. I've never seen my temp gauge go up at all, nor does the engine seem any hotter under the hood as compared to when I didn't down shift. The downside is that it's eating up my rear tires much faster due too them taking the brunt of the braking action.

I never had heard of people even shifting while they're moving in autos. Then again, I'm not familiar with their workings. What are the limitations on it? I'm guessing Drive-3-2-1-N are able to be shifted in to when you're moving?

When you touch the brakes the lockup disengages the trans does not down shift.

Depending on the grade, it will in fact downshift. Mines gone as low as 3rd.
