Just a note to invite you to see what I have been doing to help you plan a Baja trip or just study the peninsula in greater detail.

I have moved my website to a new platform that allows me to add, edit, and update content.
Trip Photos; Maps; GPS waypoints; Kilometer marker guide; Historic photos; and links to other Baja resources are all at www.vivabaja.com

The past week, I have been busy with the changes... return and see what is new as I continue to build the new Viva Baja. www.vivabaja.com

How is it now days? I grew up in San Diego and spent alot of my time in Baja. Made a trip down to La Paz with some friends back in the day. I haven't been back in over 15 years though. I always have the feeling that it's not as safe as it use to be but that could be ignorance on my part. Man, I use to love hanging out in Baja.

Can't be any worse than most American cities (is what I usually say)!
What my friends and I like to do is remote camping... go where only 4x4s can get to. In that case, you are as safe as anywhere. We drive only in the daytime and don't go to Baja to party... we hate Cabo, for example.

Even we give each other space when camping with friends on my favorite Baja beach (Shell Island). Not another soul as far as the eye can see!

Nice of you to say so, thanks!
I have been adding maps... now about 100 maps that show Baja from 1701 to today on the maps page on VivaBaja.com
    https://vivabaja.com/maps/
    [IMG]
Even have maps I made in the list, naturally!

Thanks! Just a lot of fun for me adding maps, making new trip pages, and editing the old ones. VivaBaja.com (formerly DavidKsBaja.com) was started in February 2000 using a WebTV to make pages. In a couple years, I was given the URL of VivaBaja.com (as I had Viva Baja parties to celebrate Baja on the Internet)... After 2010, when WebTV/ MSNTV ended its service, I couldn't easily make new web pages and relied on computer-smart friends to help be.
Now, my site is on a WordPress platform and non-computer language people (like me) can easily have a website or edit my old website.

I made a Facebook group page to discuss the new VivaBaja or anything about Baja camping and backcountry travel. I already have a Baja Missions Facebook group (over 4,000 members), so I needed a place for the non-history posts that some wanted to share. Here is the new group link to VivaBaja on Facebook:

Thanks... I have been making trip web pages that I wasn't easily able to before the move to a new platform. Just completed this one: https://vivabaja.com/p317/

I've always wanted to road trip from SD to cabo. An ex roommate of mine has family in Mexico, and he talked me out of it. Still really want to do it tho!

Cabo is not why everyone goes to Baja. There is a thousand miles of Baja before Cabo!
I have been going to Baja for over 50 years but only to Cabo five times and most times just passing through. See my site for travel ideas: www.vivabaja.com

Glad to see you are still active here, David. I found vivabaja.com just before leaving for a couple weeks trip south, and it would have made planning immensely easier. Managed to print some of your drawn maps as a stopgap and another resource to look through at camp.
I incorporated some attempts at mission visits in the recent trip and got to Santa Gertrudis (nice place, great old ranch family still there) via Punta San Francisquito way. Half heartedly looked for the mission book down there but I was keeping pretty remote. Cheers!

Agree 100%, I once drove nearly the entire length, stopped in La Paz and did not really intend to go any further. Met a guy who was dive certified, talked me into continuing to Cabo for diving. Big mistake, just like I'm back in So Cal. Only real difference to me is more bars. Then again it may be because I'm not a big partier but if I was could do way cheaper near home.

One of my favorite pictures I have of all time is when you first see the bay of Bahia de Los Angeles from the road. Lots of very healthy strange endemic plants in the foreground, a emerald blue bay studded with islands beyond.

The desert in Baja is quite different than So Cal, lot of unusual plants and cacti, also they are actually green and have flowers. It almost seems more like a garden than natural sometimes. I assume its the moisture that comes off the sea.

Glad you are enjoying Baja and its missions! Thanks for posting!!
My book could make future trips even more interesting?
Ordering is easy and if you use www.oldmissions.com, they come from me and I will sign them.
In Baja, they are sold at a few locations like the Bahia de los Angeles museum, Baja Cactus Motel in El Rosario, the Silver Museum in El Triunfo, and several bookstores.
