Bak Industries Revolver X2

I get mine tomorrow from Amazon Prime at full price for access cab 6 ft bed. But shipping to Hawaii would eat up any discount I could get from another vendor.

 

Weekend project, if weather cooperates

 

Installed my Bak Revolver X2 this afternoon:

1) I painted the aluminum brackets black, just so they blended in a bit better. 4/side on 5 foot bed.
2) When you remove the side utility rails to install the tonneau cover side rails - it exposes some painted metal, in my case Quicksand. This may bother some people.
3) The factory utility rails are re-mounted about 1.5" lower, and are fully useable
4) It is important to install the tonneau cover rails as far forward as possible
5) I also had to push the rolled up cover as far forward as possible and tighten the 2 nuts/side with a 1/2" socket, in order to properly clear the back end so it could latch properly
6) If you ever wanted to remove the cover completely, there are 4 nuts (the kind with the plastic collar to prevent them from backing off) that need to be removed at the front. Other covers may be easier to remove, if that is something you will be doing regularly
7) Assuming the side seals will flatten once it gets warmer (next June for Ontario!)
8) About 50% of the back window is still exposed when the cover is rolled up. It is not meant to be left partially open. There is a strap on each side that holds the rolled up top.
9) Seems well constructed. Time will tell if this is true, and how leak proof it is.
10) I also had previously installed a front rail, which does not need to be moved with the cover installation

 

You can take a hair dryer or heat gun and the seals will lay flat. This is what the truck supply does here in Illinois during the winter when they install tonneau covers.

 

On the long bed version, the S brackets are at the very ends of the track. So, you can't adjust the placement of the rails or it won't screw into the track system holes. The cover has to be centered on the rails to lock properly.

 

Anyone who bought the X2 for a 2nd Gen, can you take a look at my post about how it's supposed to fit on the tailgate? Idk if i did something wrong with the installation or if it is just made the way it is. Thanks!

@Auroraboy I've been looking into this cover and was wondering if you could give an update on how the cover works in the cold/snow? My winters will be no-where near as bad yours are but some insight on if it becomes junk or not would be great.

 

It will freeze up in freezing rain conditions, particularly where the back seal lays on the top of the tailgate. The side seals will also freeze to the sides of the bed. Not sure it is any worse than a trifold cover however. It will also not roll up as tight when it is really cold, as it will in warm weather. This is not a big deal however.

 

So no issue of not being able to lower the locks that keep the cover in place? Just some extra ice keeping it stuck/frozen down? I ask because I came across this video (https://youtu.be/W_Szgx4LOrY) and wanted to make sure that it won't be sealed for winter.

 

Never had that problem personally. Since the Revolver X2 has that long locking bar on each side - it is a more complicated locking system than most trifold I have seen. This MAY lead to more freezing issues as shown in the video. On the other hand, I think the Revolver X2 is harder to break into than most trifold, due to how the cover interlocks with the locking bars.

If you have concerns, go with a trifold.

I'm having the same problem to. Been waiting on a fix for mine for a month now. I like the x2 other than the gap.

 

oh yeah, this f**cker freezes solid shut on a cold wet day. I've never owned a truck or therefore a tonneau before this, so I thought it was just part of the deal.

I quickly learned to plan in advance, but it is NOT an awesome feature.

 

Have a Bak Revolver X2 currently after having an Undercover Flex trifold. In my experience, all rolling or folding tonneau covers will freeze to the rails and tailgate in cold wet freezing weather.

 

@Auroraboy I was curious does the front(closest to the cab) of your cover bump up slightly? Along where the cover rests on the rubber seal. It's hard to see on your pictures above. I installed my cover yesterday and wasn't sure if it was a matter of time for it squish or if I need to tighten the front bolts more.

 

Mine looks dead flat to me.

 

I have a gen 3 and it sights up ever so slightly at the front. Water does get in through the side of the front part. Anyone sealed that section up ?

Flat to me. Maybe you need to tighten the front hold down nuts down while someone presses down on the cover.

 

I need a favor from a short bed revolver owner.

Can you take a measurement of the height fully rolled up? Flush to the bed side cap to top of the roll please.

Also. A photo looking down straight down the bed rail at the "roll."

I'm building a custom bed rack that will hopefully work flawlessly with the Revolver. I just need to work out measurements and positioning.
