I wanted a lockable, somewhat weatherproof truck bed. After researching several solutions I settled on the BAKFlip MX4. It cost me about a grand after tax and shipping.

    Pros:
·It was designed to have the tailgate opened and closed without having to open/close the tonneau cover
    ·Very low profile design
·Can be secured in the fully closed, 2/3rds open and fully open position if you need to transport larger items
    ·Great protection from weather
·You CAN fit a propane tank in the upright position on top of the OEM bed mat and close the tonneau cover

    Cons:
·You need to drill into your truck bed to run the drain hoses
·The mounting brackets relocate the OEM bed rail system
·Foam bumper pieces fall off over time

    Bottom line:
I installed this cover myself and have had it on my truck for 7 months. I would recommend this product to anyone. If anyone would like detailed pictures of this product just let me know.

Installed mine today with a few modifications. Seems to be pretty nice so far. No rain to really tell how waterproof it is. I siliconed some of the gaps, installed my own drain tubes in a much more convenient spot and fabricated some simple anti coat hanger doo dads to add a lot more security to the system. So far so good. Rock solid.

Do the bed cleats hit the cover when it’s down or there is plenty of clearance to move them along the rail?

There is a 2.5" gap between the bottom of the tonneau cover and the top of the cleat. The attachment brackets supplied with the MX4 lower the OEM rail about 1.5".

Thanks for the write up! Been thinking of getting this cover as my truck didn't come with the OEM one. Between this and the Extang, did you look at both, if so, what made you choose the MX4?

I'm curious where you got that aluminum from for the anti-hangar shield?

    I used 1/16" x 1"
    Anodized Aluminum angled stock.
    SKU 608034

    Cost 8.99
6 SS Screws and washers about 3 bucks.

Came in a 3 foot section. Cut two pieces at 12 7/16. Lined everything up, measured some. Measured again. Penciled drill marks. Center punched them. Drilled pilot holes, then aligned the bracket up with the existing latch bracket assembly, made marks, center punched and drilled some holes.
For both I gradually drilled using the next size up. I used Stainless Steel sheet metal screws with rubber washers to mount them. The bracket when installed, meets up with the tailgate with a very small gap in between. It was perfect, as you can see in the picture. Once closed more the gap closes. I just had it out a little more so you can see better. Overall a great and easy mod that increases the security of the BakFlip tremendously.

I have the oem bed divider & bed mat for my 2nd gen. I’ve been looking at the MX4, but any ideas if they would all be compatible together?

I wondering, do your drains tubes drain into the wheel well or do you have them routed out somewhere? I don't like the long tube routes to the existing holes. I was thinking of going down like yours but maybe make a hole to drain out into the gap between the cab and bed

I just ordered an MX4 and should be here Friday but I need help on a measurement question. I haul guitar cabinets to music gigs and they are 18" high. Im worried the MX4 will drop down my useable area below that inside the bed as the Tacoma spec sheet says the depth of the bed is 19". Can you confirm with your measuring tape what the depth is inside the bed with cover down please? If its less than 18" deep then Ill need to cancel my order asap and go back to the drawing board for a secure locking solution...

I just installed the MX4. I took a pic of the opening (which is probably the tightest point) which seems to be 17".

I've seen the price on this drop lately. It's been at $940.00, down to $863.00, and this recently dropped to $805.00 + free shipping. I don't know why I'm waiting, it sees like a great price.

I wouldn't take a chance on cramming anything in there, its pretty rigid designed to hold like 400#. The latches that grab the rail and keep it closed are plastic.

I squeeze propane tanks under the first panel of mine. They are 18" tall and its tight enough that the tanks have removed the black paint from the bottom of the cover. An 18" item will not fit under the plastic hinge parts of the cover.

Have you guys been satisfied with the weatherproofing on the MX4? Can it be opened by the front panel or only from the back?
