    Ahhhhhh, I see.....

So that is really kinda weird. Now I am very curious. I wonder when they discovered the defect, and how they traced it back. Perhaps they had multiple vendors supplying ball joint over the years, and it was only one vendor who was screwing the pooch.

<reluctantly> my truck supports your hypothisis. Built Sept.2002. Was part of the recall.

So..what your saying is...your truck is almost an '02 so if its color was Impulse Red Pearl, it would ALMOST be perfect. :D

Did you hear about the recall on Impulse Red Pearl? Bad rust problems that aren't apparent without special testing equipment. There is a special oxide in the pigment that was insufficently stabilized by a bad batch of polymers. Call the dealer.

Not a TSB, a recall. Not year-specific. Call a dealer and give them your VIN. They will tell you if the recall affects your specific truck.

bummer for you, that just happened to me as well. Your lucky(2wd) cause in my case the shock was bent along with rack in pinion cv axle. I got both sides done due too fear of it happening again. mega bucks dude. I'm still in shock. get OEM ball joints for sure. Best of luck with getting her back on the road.

Yup. The visuals are a profound motivator to make that call ot the dealer...this is the third time I have seen this on TW on a first gen. Not a photo gallery you want to be in.

BTW, thank you TW. This is the important stuff.

    • NHTSA Campaign ID Number:

      05V225000

    • Summary:

ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, DUE TO A MANUFACTURING ISSUE IN THE FRONT SUSPENSION LOWER BALL JOINT, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE SURFACE OF THE BALL OF THE JOINT MAY HAVE BEEN SCRATCHED. THE BALL JOINT MAY EVENTUALLY EXPERIENCE EXCESSIVE WEAR AND LOOSENESS, RESULTING IN INCREASED STEERING EFFORT.

    • Consequence:

THE LOWER BALL JOINT MAY SEPARATE FROM THE KNUCKLE CAUSING LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL AND A CRASH COULD OCCUR.

    • Remedy:

DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FRONT SUSPENSION LOWER BALL JOINTS FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 5, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.

    • Notes:

TOYOTA RECALL NO. 50J. CUSTOMERS MAY ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S VEHICLE SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), OR GO TO HTTP://WWW.SAFERCAR.GOV.

From the NHTSA web site- I looked up my 2002 and it showed this, maybe there are older recalls too? Seems like it must have been an assembly plant defect if it lasted 2001-2004.
TSB's are listed there too, haven't looked mine up yet.

    NONE.....yet!
You can crate an account here http://www.toyota.com/owners/ Put your VIN in and you'll be able to see any recalls on your Toyota. Additionally, if you service your vehicle at a toyota dealer or someone has ever serviced it at a Toyota dealer, it will show that info too.

You think would replace mine having long travel?

EDIT: I looked up my VIN on that link above and it says I had a "campaign" done in 4/06 and when I click on the safety recalls/service campaigns it says There are no open Special Service Campaigns or Safety Recalls on your vehicle. So maybe it was already done

It's an 89 Toyota Pickup. I got some stuff done to it.. FJ axles going under it soon.
Why don't you do balljoints yourself?

It took me a total of about 4 hours to do lower and uppers...and have the truck back on all 4s after.
