Battery advice

hey guys- I'm a total newb as far as batteries go. I've always just run the stock battery for as long as I have a vehicle.

But now- My battery has a big bulge in the side. And it's the big battery in my 2014 taco (with tow package). Do I just go to Sears or Walmart and just find one the same size and swap it? Do I need to be concerned with quality at all?

If there is a $125 and a $225 battery, default to the expensive one?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Get the 27f Sears diehard battery an you will be happy, it's the size for the tow package and all I run in my rig

I hate that your battery is having issues but I'm glad that another 2014 also had to replace their battery. I just had to replace mine literally a week ago. I went with a Duralast 27f from AutoZone ,but like Oz-t mentioned I was looking at the AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) ones from Northstar as well, but as I recall I had to order it online and it was going to be $300+ dollars so I went with the Duralast Gold from AutoZone for $140. Its made by Johnson Controls which makes a lot of batteries and was recommended by another member here @Blackout14.

Yes.......my battery I had NO clue it was dying till I couldn't start it while going to lunch. I had run it down (my fault) and did the whole overnight slow charge thought everything was fine till I did my 15k service and the toyota dude was like yeah your battery is pretty bad. Ugh......I checked each cell with a refractometer one cell was completely dead, two more were almost dead with <25% capacity a fourth was well on its way the fifth was marginal ok, and the 6th was the only one still ok. Had I known there was a battery group buy I'd of totally taken a look at getting one.

 

You have 2014 Truck, I think you have warranty on that Battery. Go to dealer and see if they can replace battery for free.

I have to admit I am extremely cheap and I like to help environment so I ignored NorthStar group buy
I simply add acid and distilled water in my batteries and keep rolling

Bought a Duralast Gold for the wife with 3 year replacement and got a new one(free) well before the 3 years ran out. It's hotter than the devil's butthole out here in the summer so that kills batteries pretty fast.

Hey, thanks to all of you for the info. Is 27F the battery size?

It's looking like Northstar might not be available locally. Will look into it more tomorrow. Sure would like to just go grab one this weekend, but I do want a good one. Lots of below zero temps here in Jan/feb. kinda irks me- I've had several Tacomas and have always been impressed with low temp start-ups. My '98 started instantly for 10 years at -20°F. Original battery. My 2014 was whining today at -5°.

I'll swing by the dealer and see what they say. Since the bulge is right under that clamp that holds the battery down, I know they're gonna say I tightened it too much and it caused the buldge. Ha I just expect that shit from the dealers anymore. Will see.

several mentions of 2014s with failing batteries in here. isn't this a 3/36,000 thing? i would be pissed if my battery died within a two years of getting the truck.
