Battery disconnect?

    Educate me. I see you're an electrical engineer.

    How can that happen if the vehicle is off, a temporary battery is clamped to the leads just before the 'old' battery is removed?.... The fresh battery is installed, temp battery is disconnected.

    It can't. As long as it is done in that order.

    I may have misread or misunderstood but I thought someone was talking about starting the truck and then removing the battery and letting the alternator carry until the new battery is in. That will cause load dump. Its explained well on Wikipedia, so I won't try and re-explain it. However all automotive electronics have methods of dealing with the issue. Its not the greatest thing to do to them though and I personally wouldn't do it. To each his own though.
