Thank you thank you thank you 3dBdown!
Just installed mine after painting, closely following your instructions and very happy with the new non-eye-sore look!

If you lived close, I'd pay you top dollar to do mine! This is perfect for these trucks IMO! You listed great instructions but I flat out have zero confidence in myself to do something like this!

    Very nice work OP.

Very important part of the equation is the 2k clear. The parts store 1 part clear will not hold up to the beating a grill takes. One part also has near zero UV protection so your paint will fade quickly.

May try this after the truck has more than 200 miles on it.

Looks great. Any idea what black was used? Looks glossy but didn't know if you had the paint code or requested a specific black.

I had requested the shop use 4V6 (quicksand) on the outer ring and 202 (black) on the grill as well as 2 coats of clear coating but whether they did or not, I am unsure. I struggled a little between a matte and gloss finish but decided to go with a gloss to match the body paint. I also felt painting the outer ring the same as the body paint would "shrink" down the size of the grill visually. Strangely, On my last visit to the dealership, I had a random sales guy ask me if I had ordered the grill painted at the factory (???) Just to mess with him I said yes. lol

Haha, I love it. Thanks a lot for the info, this is perfect. I was thinking the exact same as you, paint the outer ring Quicksand to make the grill a little smaller, wanted a flatter black paint for the grill but believe that the higher gloss and the clear will be much more durable. Thanks again.

Agreed, I think you'll be real happy with that outcome. I left the toyota emblem on the grill as is in hopes of a more factory appearance and evidently pulled it off with at least one toyota sales rep lol. I'm personally not a big fan of chrome but to each their own likes. Outside of the badging, light housings, and the grill, there's not a lot of chrome on the TRD OR anyway and this seemed to tone it way down for me.

Check around for a body shop to do it. Some shops may not be interested, but somebody will do it right for under $500 I would guess. Check with smaller, less obvious shops and you may be surprised. They are often more used to doing smaller custom work. I would suggest media blast if they have a cabinet, or sub it out. It will save a lot of work and make the prep easier. Your truck would look sweet this way.

Yah, looks factory with the badge and I like that. Going to try this look out myself following the OP's great instructions. I just won't have to mask as the entire grill will be black. Also going to take this opportunity to paint the rear chrome bumper in Quicksand (OR without the Tech package gets a chrome rear bumper - go figure) following the same process. Shouldn't be too bad to do it all at once.

    Just ordered up my supplies:

Not gonna lie, I don't mind the factory look, but between you and the OP, I'm digging the look! May have to really consider this!

How long do you think that black will last without a clear coat? I'm going to be blacking mine out today. Curious how necessary a good clear coat is.

Welp I finished mine. It's definitely an amateur job but I think it looks good. I had to leave for work immediately after reinstalling the grille so I don't have any installed pics yet. I'm at work now (overnights). But once the sun comes up I'll take some pics and edit them in. I used an abrasion pad to rough up the plastic, bulldog adhesion promoter, flat black for plastic, and satin clear. All purchased at my local auto parts store.
