I have a Weber Kettle and have been grilling for years now and have tried different charcoals.

My favourite go to charcoal is Basques Sugar Maple Hardwood Lump Charcoal but its been hard to find lately around here - http://www.basquescharcoal.com/nos-produits/?lang=en

I've tried the Dragons Breathe charcoal and I'm not impressed. no heat, dies out, very flaky and doesn't seem like a hardwood charcoal.

Kingsford Briquettes - my back up charcoal as i prefer the lump. Works fine but you end up with tonnes of ash at the end

Royal Oak - lump charcoal - it's my back up.

    What's your go to charcoal.

I usually use kingsford just because it comes on sale at homedepot a lot and it works decent.

I swap back and forth from Royal Oak Lump coal to good ole Kingsford. It depends on which grill I'm using. I've found that the Royal Oak burns out too quick on the Weber Smoky Joe while the Kingsford burns a really long time. The larger Charbroil Grill/Smoker I use is completely the opposite. Every bag of the Cowboy Lump coal I've bought is pulverized and not worth $0.02.

I started using Stubbs after I got my WSM. I always used Kingsford before that, but the shape of the WSM is like a chimney and when you lift the lid you can really smell whatever's in there. Using Kingsford, I noticed some kind of ammonia smell. The WSM was well broken in, and there was no meat in it at the time, and the interior didnt have any nasties on it. So, I suspected the briquettes, maybe they have some filler that's off gassing. After a few more times of experiencing the same thing (new bags each time), I then switched to Stubbs. No ammonia or off odor at all. Did that a couple times, new bags. Then went back to the Kingsford, new bag. Ammonia odor. Went back to Stubbs. No odor. Did all this one more time with same results and finally switched to Stubbs period.

I've used Stubbs and Royal Oak lump when I had my charcoal grill. I would use kingford when in a pinch or when it was more readily available.

This is what i use. It's cheap at HD and Lowes every year for Memorial Weekend. $10 for 2 18lb bags.

I'm not a hard core griller. I just like that it takes longer for the grill to heat up so that it gives me more time to drink beer.

ya we never see the 2 pack of kingsford up here and it never goes on sale. 1 bag is usually $18.99.
costco has the Dragons Breath for $14.99 for 8kg. i tried it again last night and it seemed to work alot better. my 1st attempt was 2 piles of coals between bricks with 2 beer can chickens in the middle. not sure if that caused any issues.
