    [ Original older info here: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/diy-prinsu-style-shell-rack.521186/ ]

This thread will be to show progress on the design, build, prototypes, etc. It's also to get feedback, answer questions, get ideas and suggestions, opinions, etc.

For the ones that were not part of the original thread, where posts were spread throughout, I've built laser-cut side plates and hardware kits that users could assemble themselves using crossbars from tnutz and mounts from Smittybilt.

@Barnburner then came on board to help me with logistics, design, etc. and became partner in this.

    ==========

    The end goals are:

1- To have a very flexible mounting system and rack sizes (length and width), that you can use as bed rack (flush to bed or high up to roof or anywhere in between), as a cab rack, shell rack and switch from one truck to another using the same mounts, accessories, etc.
2- To have a series of rack accessories using simple hardware, not requiring expensive plates to add on/between the rails. Options to attach anything on the racks, add baskets, lights, wind deflector, large equipment, name it.
3- To offer this system at a lower price point than other alternatives, with possibility to DIY on a little or a lot of the system.

There is a basic product page for now where you can see some pictures. It's not a transactional site yet.

This is V2 bracket, uses 5/16 hardware and only 2 different parts
    [IMG]

This is V1 bracket, using 3/8 hardware abd 4 different parts

This is the low setup, with crossbar section.

This is the tall setup(where you would attach the bottom to bed rails and put any height riser so your rack sits above bed top, up to roof. The vertical riser would then be connected horizontally with yet another extrusion if you raise high (and to attach more stuff).. So with a 2ft riser, you'D likely have horizontal "joints" in the middle, where you can also attach stuff.

Edit: the riser setup also allows to deal with the shells/toppers that have two different heights.

The extrusions are 8020 stuff yes, the same that you use to build manufacturing equipment.

The side plates are aluminum laser-cut and powder coated (maybe anodized in the future) and the brackets not sure yet but likely also laser cut and bent... Or made out of extrusions

I just noticed an error in my V1 assembly. The small inner brackets are inverted, the one supporting the rack weight needs to sit inside the one attached to the bottom large bracket. Otherwise 100% of the weight is held by that on bolt head flange!!

Will fix tomorrow and also insert the hardware

Sold the side plates/hardware from your inaugural run to fund another mod. Now I’m back to redoing my roof rack setup. Curious to see where pricing is at currently.

Waiting for mounts before doin another run (many users want the mounts), but I think we still have some plates from the previous one.

Pricing will likely be similar for plates only, maybe a little more with hardware, but have not been through numbers yet.

I may have missed it somewhere in the other thread, but are there plans for a cab rack as well? I almost pulled the trigger on the shell rails a few times but couldn't convince myself because I want to do the full roof all at once

Yes, actually, the mounts is the key piece for that.

We want mounts that can correct all 3 axis, which no other mounts does well.. and also be infinitely adjustable in height.

And we are reworking the side plates to have fixed spacing to offer mounting accessories as well as work on any truck can or shell.
