Apparently the bed extender changed for 2012. According to trdparts4u, the part number is PT392-35120 (2012) and PT392-35000 (2005-2011).

I ended up with the 35120 but think the "older" style is more functional.

Winch, front hitch, step bars, bed extender, bed step, gull-wing toolbox, tailgate lock, security system, cb radio, etc.
I actually prefer the looks of the newer style. Only complaint is the nylon straps. How do others prevent them from rattling around? When adjusted to attach to the tailgate, the strap is just long enough for the metal clip to bounce against the lowest (when folded) bar on the bed extender. I've tried folding and/or tying the strap, but the metal clip aways seems to bump against something.

Ole roundy is better because it has more room. WTF would Toyota make it smaller?

Kinda like how they f'ed up the rear seats in the newer AC trucks. My 2011 has that stupid storage console in the back and the seats do not fold to make a flat surface like the earlier 2nd gens. I did not know that until I bought it. I simply thought they were all that way. Then I saw somebody's 2006 AC with a folded flat surface in back and I was like WTF??

Just had my extender installed today and I can't, for the life of me, understand why the change in design. Less capacity, less function, the lock down straps can now make contact with the paint due to their length.....WTF toyota?

they made it smaller I bet due to tailgate issues we have with our trucks :(

I like the new extender bc it gives a little working space on the tailgate and some sitting space if needed. Not sure if that was the intention but It works perfect for my needs when fishing and yaking.

I think this comes down to a preference thing and what you do when you take your truck out.

Glad I found this thread. Just ordered the 2012 and emailed them to change it to the 2011.

Amp Research makes the OEM unit, so I'm not sure if Toyota was behind the redesign, or Amp Research. In either case, I'm glad I've got the older style, which seems to have a more beneficial shape.

i know this is kind of off topic, but does anyone know if there is an actual lock to buy for the bed extender? i saw the DIY bed extender lock, but i was looking for something that was specifically designed for the truck and the bed extender itself.

I purchased the Pop & Lock tailgate lock - it provides some degree of extra security for the tailgate, tail lights and the bed extender.
