My guess as to why they made the changes is so you can use the electrical outlet and cubby holes with the extender flipped in.

Not sure what brand/model that is, but it looks SIMILAR to an Insta-Gate. I don't recall them being discussed much, but Devious6 installed one last year. (If I didn't already have Toyota's OEM version, this would be high on my wish list.)

Not much before it folds. There is a modification here to fix the issue.

According to some here, the tailgates on current models have been strengthened. Sadly, Toyota, like most pickup truck manufacturers, is extremely vague on exactly how much the tailgate will support.

Part of that vagueness may be due to the variables involved. For example, a tailgate might support considerable weight placed gently on it, while far less weight thrown forcefully could cause it to fail.

In the end, it's mainly up to us to use common sense and good judgement when it comes to what we place on the tailgate, remembering that's it's first and foremost a tailgate rather than a bed extender. Oversized, heavy, loads might be better suited for a trailer or larger (U-Haul) truck.

Thanks for the useful reply stewarx. Not going to be putting really heavy stuff on it any, but just wanted to make sure it wasn't going to crumple if your sitting on it with a couple friends.

I have a new one (Toyota OEM bed extender) still in the box for a 2007 Tundra ... wonder if I can make it fit my 2011 Tacoma ...

Meh, might as well get this one instead. More room than even the old OEM extender.

That is the one I will purchase in the next month or so. If anyone knows where to get one for a good price, please let me know. Would be greatly appreciated.

You may very well be able to do so. When I bought mine, the paperwork said it was compatible with both Tacomas and Tundras (of certain years). Unfortunately, I don't recall the specifics on years...

Well, I suspect that mostly depends on how large your friends are. For example...

Okay, in the interests of good taste
(and to spare others of the nightmare),
I'm finally deleting the image of the two
very large women sitting on a tailgate.

+1. I just got rid of my 01 last week and picked up an 05 double cab. It had the older style bed extender on it when i bought it. I ride a cr250r and my wife has a crf150r. with both bikes loaded I cant even put the bed extender on. Looks like I might be able to with that one. Does anyone know what brand it is?

I have a 2010 Tacoma 4x4 with the PT392-35000. I was hauling some 2x10s and had them leaning on top of the back of the extender and the plastic side bracket on one side that the aluminum rods sit in broke. Not the bracket that mounts to the bed but the part that fits into it. I found the plugs for the tubes which I also lost but no luck on the the other part. Anyone have any idea if the mounting bracket kit contains this piece? Or does this piece come with the bed extender itself? (My guess) Most of the extenders I see say mounting brackets sold seperately but I have a feeling these side pieces would be sold with the tubing. Correct? Any clue where I might find these pieces without having to buy the tubing? Searched high and low to no avail. thanks!

I carefully cut the stitching, took the straps off, and took them to a shoe repair shop and had snaps put on. I just leave the straps off until I need to strap it down.

How does that work? Do you just fold the straps over and snap them into themselves? I've considered adding a short, removable, strap between the two straps on the tailgate extender to hold them suspended together between the metal bars. This will at least keep the metal clips away from anything to rattle against.
