Other trucks do have the issue.

I've posted some of the available solutions for Ford raptor owners in the past.

It really comes down to the vehicle use.
Many raptor and Tacoma owners use the truck as a base for their own customizations, the same as jeep wranglers.

Silverado, f150, ram, ranger, frontier, there's a higher expectation to use as-is.

But we also need to remember the forum mentality. We are all enthusiasts talking passionately about something we enjoy using and changing. Toyota sells far more Tacoma's to the general public that the biggest 'mod' will be weekly trips to the car wash.

The old two latch style tailgate, which Toyota still installs on some modern Hilux Trucks, solved the issue decades ago. Folks often think these latches are just a cheaper way to latch the gate, but in fact, are far more. They essentially allow the tail gate to become part of the box structure, and do so at point where it will have the most strength and durability.

I’ve long considered adding not only the latches, but the complete rails with rope hooks.

I’ve seen even those fail or become misaligned to the point of no longer latching. It’s a weakness as old as tail gates, not some new problem brought about by suddenly deficient manufacturing. A few people will always find a way to go too far with a load and break something. The vast majority of trucks just never get used in a way that exposes it which justified not doing anything about it. Treat it like any other mod you do to enhance your trucks capabilities.
