I'm being sent to Tripler for 9 months. Not authorized to ship a car or have a rental. Sounds like I will be given quarters at Schofield Barracks and expected to ride a government bus back and forth. Not looking forward to that.

Any idea how long, time wise, that commute is? How about the availability of cheap transportation? Something around $2000 that I can drive back and forth in and easily sell once I'm done with it?

I'm looking forward to seeing Hawaii, but can't say I'm excited about the job or living arrangements.

Any decent hunting on the island for a nonresident?

The commute is about 20 miles between Schofield and Tripler...so about 30 minutes -- give or take, depending on traffic...and expect traffic.

For a cheap POV, you're best bet is to either look in craigslist (specify "Oahu" and watch out for scammers on CL), or https://www.militarycarlot.com/ is another good option for used cars (online lemon lot).

Can't speak on hunting, but having firearms is a PITA here. I have for personal security, but only kept at the house because CCP is impossible to obtain.

Just get a state ID once you have a permanent address that you receive your mail at. You'll need two different types of mail. i.e bank statement and light bill, etc. I can't speak on your Temp assignment but who knows you may get an extension. As far as hunting goes, you may need to take the hunters safety course w/ DLNR. I don't know about Oahu much. Big Island is pretty good but there are seasons for turkey and other birds. I've only hunted pigs, sheep and goat on private land. Lanai does good chartered Axis Deer hunts. If you're looking to bring firearms into the state there is a registration process which you will wind up having to pay 42 bucks to be implemented in our 'state of the art' handy dandy wrap back system and records of your firearms will be forever kept w/ the state of Hawaii. But definitely check out 2aHawaii forum. Great information for those relocating temp or permanently to the state w/ firearms.

    Cheers,

Have fun with that morning traffic. Island is beautiful lots of hikes and stuff. You gin laws here are draconian in this liberal island paradise. Tripler does have nice view if you're on the makai(Oceanside) of the hospital.

Aloha bro! Shitty they're not sending your car with you.

There's TONS of vehicles for under 4k all over the place. Hickam AFB (close to tripler) has a huge lemon lot, there's always some steals there. If it runs well, registration and safety are up to date, you should be able to sell it for the same amount when you leave.

    Thanks for the info.

I am hoping to do some hunting while there, but not planning on bringing any guns. For one thing the laws are too restrictive for my liking, but also because I'm sure where I will be staying I will not be allowed to keep them. I will be on PCS orders, but for less than 365 days, so it limits what the army will do, like shipping a vehicle. I will also be assigned housing if available as they don't want to pay me BAH based on Hawaii rates.

The joys of being a reservist on active duty.

See if they give you housing options. Tripler is literally surrounded by housing, that's BS if they make you stay at Schofield. Pearl Harbor has all branches in the barracks as well.

It's got something to do with Tripler's arrangement with housing for reservist. 90 day reservists stay in guest housing on Tripler and 180+ day reservist stay on Schofield. I don't mind staying wherever they put me, it just gets difficult when you don't have a vehicle.
