You're not wrong, but to someone building a prerunner for the first time with a limited budget, a sidequest 4x4 swap won't help get them any closer to their ultimate goal when the $4k spent on a trans, diff, front gears, transfer case, labor if you can't diy it, extended axles, and maybe an ecu would have paid for a set of deavers, bypasses, shackles, bumps, and a fabbed bed cage which will ultimately be the parts that determine how successful you'll perform in the bumps - even more than a front LT kit but nobody does the rear first as a rule when starting out because they want to look the part with long arms up front.

Trust the process: lbj's, front kit or at least rebuildable coilovers up front, SUA, glass, gussets, etc in that order.

"Looking to start a prerunner build on an 01, toss some ideas out there !" This makes me laugh and reminds me when I was building my truck.

@01stgentaco , are you ready to drop thousands and thousands of dollars on a project? Then you came to the right spot! I have about 4k just in shocks... just for the front. I haven't even started the rear yet. 7k in a proper LT kit. You can get a roll cage anywhere from 5-10k. Did I mention I haven't even back half the rear yet. My build cost more than what the truck is worth but worth every dime. I told my wife, when I die I want to be buried with my truck.

In all honesty, building the truck is fun if you have the money and it snowballs really fast. Stick to a plan and stay with it. Check out my build page for ideas, link below.

Check out the build thread I posted earlier - probably the nicest if not one of the nicest leaf sprung trucks on here and my friend pieced things together on a shoe string budget over time until he could fab and worked at a company where he designed his own race kit. There are ways to do things for relatively cheap if one commits time and effort into scanning places like Dezert Race classifieds, Badlinesgoodtimes classifieds, OfferUp, CL, Marketplace etc. and is willing to drive to get stuff (which isn't always possible and people sometimes just have to bite the bullet for retail prices). People usually have more time than money when they're young so I think if that fit's OP's profile, he could just get basic stuff going and have fun.

I don't recall OP saying he had a "limited budget". OP hasn't really said anything other than wanting to build a "desert prerunner". Maybe he'd be happier with a 4wd swap and an entry level mid travel setup, all of which would be cheaper and easier to do than buying a high end LT setup.

It's a really well made bit of kit. Some nice precision bits, was pleased to see how well made it was, and the travel reduction is nice..I can get at my CB better. Just makes it more fun to drive. The installation is critical though, gotta stake down some bolts, but no big deal. Highly recommended.

I've been holding out for the Marlin Crawler one but it looks like they'll never be back in stock.

Depends on what direction you want to take it. I did king 2.5 all around and I’m very happy with it for weekend off-road trips. It can charge fire roads and some smaller obstacles with its current set up. But yeah lower ball joints are a must if your around 200k miles
