I like Remington. My first shotgun about 1977, after the single shot I learned on, was a 20ga 870 that I hunted quail, doves, ducks, and even deer with; wish I still had that shotgun today. :(
When I retired from active duty in 2009, my wife found and bought me a 1987 12ga 870 with which I've hunted grouse, as well moose with the included slug barrel. I've also got a fancy 1187 that I shoot clays with on occasion, but it's picky about ejecting certain cheap shells. The 870 ain't fancy, but it has my heart. ;)

I hear ya. An 870 just feels like home to me. My muscle memory automatically takes my hand to the safety and slide stop where they are positioned on the 870. My dad hunted with a 12 gauge 870 before moving on to an over under and after I out grew my single shot break action 4-10, my dad got me a 20 gauge 870. I dove hunted with it for 4-5 years before i was big enough to handle a 12 gauge over under. My wife has her 20 gauge 870 by the bed.

I just figured I'd take a look at semi-autos and the Mossberg 930c comes with the two barrels for the same price or slightly less than an 1187 so it seems like a good deal.

Sorry I edited the post after checking specs online. It's about 6.1 lbs and a 26" barrel, still light for a shotgun. I've shot a full round of clays with it using bird shot and it will kick your ass, but that's nearly 100 rounds. It really isn't bad, for damn sure a smooth operator. It's a field gun though, I brought it in the marsh once and thought I ruined it.

My Local Academy shows as having the 870 Express 12 gauge 28" in stock at $289. You fools are tempting me just to pick it up to try out as I've never shot one.

It will last forever. I've used mine for 25 years now, never jammed.

Wife is going out of town this weekend. I'll swing by and check it out. Might be another "oh that one? I just had it stored in the attic and got it down" type of situation.....

It's a good shotgun at a great price point. Simple, classic and reliable. You won't be disappointed if you decide to go for it.

If you have a shop vac you can put it in blower mode to put a faint layer of dust on it. She'll never suspect:D

The one I have is the 870 express magnum. I have it set up for home defense but change it back for when I go duck hunting. It really is a great all around gun.

Hahaha, I actually heard about a guy who would do that for the exact same reason, so I can't claim credit but I'm happy to pass along the good idea.

H&R Pardner Pump, its below 200.00 and is basically an 870 under a different name. The only difference is an 870 barrel does not fit the pardner.

I will assume you want pump action. Best bang for the buck would be Remington 870 hands down. Like others have stated.
Best 12ga? Maybe not; but sure best bang for the proverbial buck

I have my father's semi auto Remington 1187 12 gauge from sometime in the early nineties. The thing is a beast. When I got it, pretty sure it hadn't been cleaned in 10+ years - for the most part still shot (wouldn't cycle every time though). After a good cleaning, you would never know how much abuse from hunting it's seen and is fun/accurate as hell.
