Go over to BITOG...lotsa people doin' it. If you want some brands capable of it try M1 0W40 or any of their EP line. Penzoil Ultra (s/as Shell Helix Ultra), Castrol Edge. There are others.

But just saying 'protects' is advertising gibberish that means nothing. Any oil...even the cheapest Walmart blue bottle...'protects' at 25K to some degree.

Amsoil's a good oil, but to say it's the only one that's good for EDI use (assuming that's what you mean) is equally disingenuous to say the least and ignores people's actual experience. If you want to run any oil, including Amsoil, that long you have be careful about maintenance by adding makeup oil from filter changes and oil consumption. Not just because of the obvious reason but because makeup provides a critical 'kick' to TBN.

Finally, you have got to get some UOA's to catch when something unexpected happens, completely unrelated to the oil itself, leading to contamination, early TBN depletion and resultant corrosion buildup. Something as simple as a pinhole leak in the air intakes or a miniscule coolant leak; things unique to your engine/driving conditions and impossible for any oil manufacturer to predict. You are rolling the dice if you don't.

It appears from the poll results, that Mobile 1 has done it's job marketing its product. :D

IMHO...it has more to do with availability and price. You can get M1 at WalMart, regularly at sale price, and the shelves are always stocked.

I can walk in to PepBoys or Autozone and am greeted with cavernous holes where the Penn Ultra, Royal Purp. or Castrol Green would sit (except for the weird racing grades or 15w50). Amsoil persists refusing to certify to industry spec's and with their pyramid sale scheme (OK...Multi-Level Marketing, if you insist) that cheapens their cachet in most consumers' mind.

M1 is great oil, relatively inexpensive and widely available.

Not a AMSOIL kool-aid drinker by any means, but their refusal to adhere to API certification and classification is not a detriment to the "actual" quality and use of their products. In the case of high end quality synthetic oils, API is a hindrance and AMSOIL choose to reinvest their money internally rather than pay the 10's of thousands of dollars to keep a certain oil "API Spec".

AMSOIL has always had a good track record of backing their product if it actually causes a oil related failure. In years past, AMSOIL has stated they can count on one hand per year the amount of actual claims they have paid out. In many of those cases, they actually took the high road and paid claims that reasonably they should not have had to but did out of good will.

I voted Royal Purple and let me tell you why (if you have an hour). I recently did alot of searching and calling around to the R&D depts. of some of the Oil Co. I was interested in. One call was made to Royal Purple, Mobil and Amsoil. I will start by saying this Mobil has not been using a fully synthetic base stock for years now (ever since they lost the legal battle to Castrol) Castrol had been buying all of their basestocks from Mobil chemical Co. until they were bought out by BP. After this buy out Castrol stopped using Mobils base stock and started using another. This is the same time (ish) that castrol began pitching their Syntec line claiming "fully synthetic", when in reality they were using a group 3 base stock that had been refined using the hydrocracking method. This does create a very good mineral oil but it is not really synthetic. Group 3 bases are derived from mineral oil. This made Mobil mad, they filed a lawsuit and all took them to court and in 1999, Mobil lost. Mobil was sueing for market share, castrol was selling a fake synthetic for real synthetic prices. (for the record the basestock that was being used before the switch was a PAO synthetic. After losing the legal battle they decided why not use cheaper group 3 bases as well?? So they did, and thats what you are getting when you buy Mobil Fully Synthetic, uless you get the "extended performance" that oil is still a PAO synthetic. I spoke to a Mobil engineer and he was very secretive, he stone walled me whem I asked anything about it being "what" basestock he said thats proprietary info, and this and that. Both Amsoil and Royal Purple had issues telling me which base stocks they used, I did not want the ingredients just the class of base stock (ie, group1,2,3,4 or 5) So after all the research and hashing over what I planned on doing, seeing as I had always used Mobil and thought I was getting a fully synthetic oil..... I watched as many videos on oil testing and performance I could and it really started to look like Royal Purple was the best. I made the switch and have never looked back. I ran Mobil in my 2007 Jeep Wrangler for the first 2.5 years before I switched. I used more than 1.5 qts between changes and it had more clicking than i thought a newer engine should. After the second change I was no longer using oil, and the engine was super quite and seemed (I know this sounds silly but if you pay as much attention to your vehicle as I do then you know what I mean) happier, smooth revs and better fuel mileage (yep I keep very tight MPG records). So thats why I answer RP, when I see that most of this forum uses Mobil (according to the poll) its not crap oil it is good and has always kept me going, just now I prefer another brand, if I have the option. If not then I would use Mobil. Thanks for reading this all you get a gold star. JOE>

I think I understand now why some people wear tinfoil hats.

By they way: every oil company treats their oil formulations as proprietary, and every oil is a blend. M1 is fully synthetic, as is everyone's, the question is which group and in which ratios of which base stocks.

I've used Castrol. I like it's availability and cost. For filters, Wix filters (on play car) and the OEM (on Toyota and Subaru) for the last 5 years. I like it's availability and cost.

The bottom line is like it was said earlier change your oil on time.

I don't agree with go with the cheapest and even Fram. I had a bad experience with Valvoline (conventional, not synthethic) burned up a Mazda engine (was useless at 150,000)and changed every 3,000 miles.

Just bought my 09 used (15,000 miles). No idea what oil is in it. Do you have to do anything special to change to synthetic?

I do know the dealer did many of the oil changes.

That may be true, but what other oil company will guarantee it? None.
    X2
They might be capable, but again, why are they not marketing it or backing it? Amsoil is the only oil that is marketed to go to 25K and there's a reason why the other oils aren't marketed to 25K... Because they can't guarantee it won't hurt the engine.

That has some truth and some not so true. All oil companies do have a proprietary blend, and every type of engine oil made today has "some" mineral oil in it. When Castrol won the suit the courts pretty much decided that the mineral oils that go through the hydro cracking process was altered enough to be called synthetic. That does not mean it is by any means. To me a synthetic is a molecule designed to carry certain atributes. Mineral oil that has been refined using a great process is still just that..... Mineral Oil. The oil co. has just found a better way to turn cockroach wings into usable oil. As far as how secretive they are I was not asking for their recipe, I was just wanting to know what their base stock was, no other co. I called had an issue telling me what group their base stocks were. Now it seems I am being taken wrong here (as I know there is alot of Mobil heads on here) I have been using Mobil in everything for years until I just made the switch, I just wanted to share what I discovered so if others were on the fence some of the work was already doen for them. I stand to gain nothing by talking about something on a forum, all I hope to do is help anothe guy/girl that may be asking the same thing one day. Take it for what its worth and dont read into this too deep. Mobil is a great product but the way they acted would have made any other person on this board feel the same way... As in "why did they get so defensive when I just asked what base stock they used?" Look into this yourself, the only oil Mobil makes that starts with a real synthetic base is the Extended Performance, and note how much they are charging for it.... Yep same price as Royal Purple, interesting.. JOE>

I'm not knocking Amsoil...it certainly a great oil. But just offering the guarantee doesn't mean it will do it...or put another way, what does it mean to go to 25K?

I know of at least one real-world test sequence where they had to change the Amsoil fill at 15K. The oil had gone way out of grade: it started a 30wt and was well on it's way to being a 50 wt, and the TBN indicated it was no longer capable of providing protection needed.

15K is not bad, but not 25K.

Found the link documenting the study:

    http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/stories/amsoil.html

    Enjoy the read...it's informative.

i have tried 3-4 different ones to see which I liked best. And initially to me they all feel great. In my opinion it would be between the royal Purple and Mobil 1. Mobil 1 to me lasts longer if that makes sense. I change every 3k and before the 3k the others wear differently my truck wanted it changed before the 3k.
