Those of you who use synthetic but aren't that picky about brand, the NAPA synthetic oil is on sale for $3.29/qt through September. It's made by the same company that makes Valvoline synthetic, and the BITOG forum discussion says it's the same base stock with a slightly different additive package.

Still, a fairly high quality oil. I picked up a case (and a couple of NAPA Gold filters) to do the change that was due and the next change.

I just use the Toyota mineral one. I just change the oil at 5000KM instead of 8000KM.

I'm pretty sure next to the guarantee is an asterisk saying to change the oil regularly and do engine maintenance in general. Which is a 300,000 miles guarantee for probably all oils.

Wanna hear something that'll make people cringe? I drove my '91 Hilux 190,000 km before changing the oil.....I know,I know. But the old girl never missed a beat. I put another 60,000 (changing the oil at a more sensible interval). the guy that bought it is still going. It has approx. 500,000 kms on it now. And yes I am ashamed of myself.
My '06 Tacoma gets more respect with Mobile ! every 5000ish kms.

not to many, love it the way it is

    That is insane

I start to feel lower compression or something like that around the 5k mile mark. The Hilux has a diesel engine, does that affect how you have to change the oil when compared to a gasoline engine?

so converted to miles- you changed at 118,060 miles

Amsoil, Redline and Royal Purple (group 4 synthetics) all test very similar for wear and longevity. *BUT*... Amsoil is more affordable, so in that respect I am completely an "AMSOIL man". In my observation Mobil 1 has a strong following largely because of their marketing (nascar), and the simple fact that it is sold at Walmart. FWIW Mobil 1 is only a group 3 and it's formula was greatly cheapened when Exxon bought Mobil. - look it up

+1 ^ , it's not like you hurt any thing. None of the modern oils are "stupid" to use. It's just that some are better choices for varying reasons.

Mobil 1 is easily available, but the best UOAs come from Valvoline Sythetic, Amsoil, and Pennzoil Platinum or even conventional.
