So they are betting that your truck won't make it to 300K on their oil...

And this makes me feel good about using their product... why??

Guys, Look on the bottle. Royal Purple, Mobile One, Valvoline, Castrol Oil, all say full or fully synthetic on the label. Thur research I have found that this means they are 75% synthetic. I checked Amsoil and thier bottles say 100% synthetic. One guy said that Amsoil is more expensive but on a recent check at Pep Boys Davie Speed Shop, Amsoil top tier 100% Synthetic is cheaper than all of them. Anyone that is not predigest knows the best oil on the market is Amsoil... The cheapest place I have found Amsoil is at AmericanLubes.com
I have been using Amsoil on all my lubes for the last six months and not only have improved gas milage but have better pickup. If anyone finds a better price let me know.

75% synthetic is 100% fine. Actually, I think 0% synthetic is most likely fine as well if you change the oil often enough.
In other words, there is IMO no real life difference between the Amsoil and say the Mobil 1.

Sorry, but I don't buy this. I have switched from Dino to synthetic on many cars in the past, some of them while living in Europe (supposed to be better synthetic oil over there). I have never seen better mileage, let alone "pickup". Maybe on a 2hp engine the (supposed) difference in friction would make a difference?

Here in Texas it's so hot...............................How hot is it??
It's so hot I saw a dog chasing a cat and they were both walking!
Therefore I use Castrol 5w50 year around. 127K and no rod nuts in the drain pan yet!

What oil temperatures do you see? 5w50 is awfully thick at normal operating temperatures compared to 5w30.

I used to run 20w50 in a really worn Dodge 383 to eke a few more miles out of it before the engine was done.

I voted for Amsoil. Started using years ago and never looked back. I've also had my oil changes documented with Blackstone Labs. The two most recent are on the forums here:

    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/122295-blackstone-tech-oil-report-amsoil.html

To those who say that most synthetic guys would still change their oil every 5k, then they probably shouldn't be running synthetic. The whole point of a synthetic oil is to have a slower breakdown resulting in longer use. Looks like for daily driving in Atlanta heat, traffic, etc. 15k will be about all you can get out of Amsoil 0W30. Filter changes are every 7,500.

I think most engine oils produced today are fine and engines last longer because of the technology going into building them. I still have a 67 Impala with a 396 running just fine with no rebuild. Tore it down and it looked good. I doubt whoever owned it the first 196k miles used synthetics and ran lab tests.

I use Amsoil because it allows me to go almost a year in my Tacoma and yearly in my non-daily drivers without an oil change. I pay $7 a quart which for $42 (extra for topping off throughout the year) isn't bad for a 15k change interval. About the same price as someone putting cheaper stuff in at $20 a change and changing every 7500 miles.

I plan on keeping the Taco until it dies, then dropping a new engine and transmission in it and going some more.

Whatever you choose if you complete the proper preventative maintenance on your vehicle it should last a lifetime, literally. Minus that stupid temp gauge solder...but that was a 5 minute fix.

    Good luck.

Not necessarily. Synthetic oils can withstand much higher temps without coking, making them a necessity in some turbo charged engines. The Turbo can get so hot that sludge produced by conventional oil will kill the engine in no time.
Does not really apply to the Taco though.

I use M1 5W30 most of the time, mainly because it's inexpensive and it makes me feel good because it says "fully synthetic" on it. :)
I just bought 6 quarts at Costco for $24 or so. I use the OEM filter, just bought 4 of them @ $3.50 each. I change my oil every 5K miles, which translates to around every 6 months. Works for me. Well, under $25 per oil change.

    research some more...

100% synthetic means exactly the same as fully synthetic... nothing. They are both marketing terms with no strict definition.

I don't think it matters all that much as long as the oil is changed very regularly.

X2. I was thinking of sending it out to Blackstone but at $35 plus postage it's cheaper for me to just change it more often so that's what I do. I use synthetic every 5,000 and whatever is on sale usually Shell from BJ's.

Oil has to meet standards. As long as they meet the standards and you change it on regular basis you are OK. The standards are represented by letters on the oil label - which I'm not going to take time to go look at now - If the letters are the same, one oil is as good as the other, just buy the one on sale unless you have $ to burn and it makes you feel better to pay more then go ahead - why not ?

That's sorta true and is a real problem with turbo'd VW's, especially their 1.8T engines. But it's not the engine that ends up ruined... it's the turbo charger. When shut down the cooling water flow stops, as does oil flow to the turbo bearings. Already red-hot turbo temperatures bloom and cokes the oil in the turbo's oil passage restricting flow so the bearings go bad early and often.

Same diff though 'cause the repair is super expensive, lending credence to the saying "if you can afford to pay for it with pocket change, you can afford a VW".

Using synthetic or frequent oil changes helps but caring owners drive real gentle before shutdown allowing the turbo to cool or have an electric oil pump installed that circulates oil after shutdown.

    Those are minimum standards.

Like, set standards that every car has to be able to carry at least two people and go 60 mph. Both a Smart Car and a Lamborghini Aventador meet those minimum standards.

    I prefer the Lambo.
