I wouldn't say the cheapest is the best, because there are actual studies that prove otherwise, BUT I agree with you... The most important thing, regardless of what oil you use, is to change it regularly on schedule. Do that at the proper intervals, and you shouldn't have any problems. I just prefer synthetic, because if I do go over, it is less of an issue than if I were running conventional oil, in my opinion.

meh on the syntheic oil... I have been using Penoizd( spelling) for a long time. works well for me.. The main key is stick to the 5000 mile oil change and use the good oil filter go with it.

Kinda' obvious who paid for that test.

Seriously... Magazine articles have less credibility than internet postings.
Those Timken scar tests are very easy to adulterate.

I subbed to Four Wheeler when I had my Silverado.
I canceled after less than a year because of obvious simple bullshit.
Article on LED taillights... The text of the article indicated that the Spiderlights were the worst of the bunch and the brake lights were not visible in sunlight. The caption under the photo on the next page said that Spiderlights were the best thing since sliced bread and they would be going into their project truck.

They decided to test "mid-sized" pickups. Tacoma, Colorado, Frontier....
It was obvious that the Tacoma was the real winner... but they threw in the Ram 1500 with a V8... then... like DirtRider... they threw in a "Subjective" category that put the Dodge as the winner... much like Dirtrider always finds a way to put Honda as the winner.

I realized a while ago that people who do magazine articles are just trying to make a living like anyone else. Often they come up with some really good sounding stuff to make a sale, while often knowing less than their audience. They have a talent that they are trying to turn into a career and bills have to be paid in the mean time.

At one time "Fat Free" became a huge deal in the health industry. Many article where written, a lot of them read by doctors and other health care individuals who started recommending that people follow what they had read. After a few years of this it kind of faded out to a large extent but still lingers. The funny thing about fat free is it has never had much testing done at all. Most of the stuff seems to have been made up by someone, who I would guess are starving writers trying to make ends meet.

On subjects that are as subjective as motor oil a lot of articles can be written without much research and if some company is trying to sell motor oil, I'm sure they can find someone who will write an article slanted toward their oil.

When reading about motor oil, I believe I have come across posts that are written with a little different wording buy the same person slamming the same oil on different forums. I wonder if some companies don't hire people to sit at a desk and slam the competition on these forums.

Shell Rotella. In 3rd party testing it was better than the Mobil1 that everyone thinks is the best on the planet.

I have seen many lab tests done of everything you can think if and Rotella is the best value. I have even run several types of oils and had them lab sampled and Rotella always came back with very little breakdown, and yes, even compared to the Mighty Mobil1..

LUCAS is the stuff to use! lol but to be entirely honest, any oil, be it synthetic or not, will keep your engine in good shape if its changed on its regular intervals.

I used to sell an automotive product line by Justice Brothers

We used the same test equipment on our truck as demonstration sales point. With a specific additive, true, the tests would never show any bearing wear, and if any, very minimal. Most additives on the market would only be the can and fancy advertising is what your paying for.

That said, would never recommend using a product like those that show no wear until your engine is broke in.. Additionally, wear test is not the whole picture, as cleaning, holding metal in suspension, and ph of the oil all count.

To me, there are as many good choices and stories as there are good choices in beer.

Main thing is to read, get a number of different sources, ask a good garage, and change on a regular basis depending on your driving conditions.

Used to sell Amsoil... Its good.... I also ran Royal Purple for years. I think Royal Purple gave better MPG than Amsoil and slightly more power. Both were fantastic though

What? An oil thread that hasn't been locked yet? Better post while I can. Did the first OC in my '13 2.7L the other day and went with Mobil 1 0w-20 and a Purolator PureOne filter.

Oh...and the best oil is the one that makes you feel good...period.

Was wondering the same thing myself since that's what's in mine right now. Ran royal purple 5w-30 in my Chevy, trying to figure out what the best thing for my 2006 Taco Prerunner 4.0L will be.

As far as I know, Toyota does not produce oil - just buys it... So my guess as to what most dealerships use, and knowing that they are concerned with the bottom line, it would be safe to bet that whatever they use is probably the cheapest...
